I'm all for the mirage tmnt series which is good in it's own way, and the tales of the tmnt is a really awesome concept (so far I've liked both issues but I will refrain judgement until they've put out at least 5), but there's still something missing. I was hoping dreamwave would be the answer to my prayers, but it turns out that it was a flop (no thanks to Peter David centering the story around some anime kid).

I was bored in chemsitry class today and just thought, what would happen if their was a comic that just rebooted TMNT and told the story, which we have heard many times before, in a much more updated and cooler way. I like the cartoon, but it seems to be going the route that Peter has taken for the regular tmnt book, plus the fact that it has to be kid friendly sort of tones it down. I may have said this before, but this time I think I have it more organized. I really want to see an Ultimate TMNT book. Sort of like like Brian Michael Bendis did for Ultimate Spider-man, but maybe a little bit more original.

In my mind it would be going the route of how the first TMNT movie went. Darker, urban, serious (and no superheroes or aliens). It would take their origins and explore them while at the same time updating the whole beat of the book and at the same time making the language more modern. I think it's a really neat idea that I wish Mirage would play around with. It's not like it would be stealing the ideas away from Peter and Kevin's original run, but rather just showing it through a different perspective....maybe.

I know I'm new to the boards and maybe that's why I haven't gotten a lot of replies to my posts, but I really would like to know what you guys think of all this, negative or positive or even inbetween. I can take the heat lay it on me, just as long as I get a response and see how crazy or genius or even bland this idea is.

I may be crazy, but I like it. However, I doubt Mirage would pick up on the idea. Might make a neat fan project though, if you could get the right people working on it.

I would like to see that happen too. I'd love to see a TMNT more akin to "City At War", that is more dark and urban. But aliens, especially the Utroms, are essential to the TMNT storyline and are unlikely to disappear from any future versions.

In reality though, the new cartoon series is pretty much an "Ultimate TMNT" from a Mirage standpoint. It's retelling the story in a new manner.

I'd love to see an Ultimate TMNT comic series. Every time the turtles appear in a new medium, it's always a treat to see new spins on their origin stories (and in the case of the new show, even the villain's origins!).

Sadly, I don't see it happening. Mirage probably doesn't want the Turtles' origin to be re-written, especially since that might confuse the masses. Lots of people are still wondering why the current show is so different from the older, well-remembered show. I always have to explain that the new show is based off of the original B&W comics.

Still, I think it's a neat idea. Since the DW series got canceled, another publisher could up the rights to produce a colored TMNT comic. Then maybe we'll get our Ultimate TMNT. :)

It'd have to be MUCH different than the DW series which was awful. Lesean's art was the only saving grace.

Bleh. The original TMNT do not need any ultimate "improvements".

I'm glad most people are agreeing with me.

Impetus, not to be nosey, but why do you think that? Ultimate isn't really an Improvement per say. I tried to make that clear in my first post. When they did Ultimate Spider-man they were in no way trying to redo Spider-man completely, because everyone knew the original Spider-man comics were the greatest, but it was just a fun way to relive the character whilst putting him in a more modern background. Which is exactly what I would like to see happen to the TMNT. They could go more in depth with the mutations, rather than having the turtles mutate fully in one issue, they could explore them more and show how it was like to grow up in the sewers. Sure they would age pretty fast to their teenage years so people wouldn't be like, they should call this children mutant ninja turtles. It's not like making the TMNT ultimatized is saying that the originals weren't really good, because they were! It's just, it would be nice to see the turtles all over again, and maybe this way more fans of the cartoon (which I agree is sorta like ultimate tmnt, but like I said in my first post, it's sort of watered down) could see how the TMNT are actually pretty dark, and we wouldn't have to keep explaining over and over that the tmnt started as an independent comic in some guys apartment. I think after a while it gets annoying to keep hearing people explain it, and I feel like a dork when I have to go in detail and explain it to someone.

I also know we would never see Mirage doing this, but that's sort of a shame, because if anything, retelling the stories of the TMNT should only be seen as flattery for Peter Laird rather than trying to make it seem we're trying to improve his characters.

I know it's a legnthy post, so if you read this congrats you've seen a rare side of me, the BORED side. :)

The turtles don't really need t be "modernized" though. They only came out in the eightees, as opposed to Spiderman, who came out in the sixties. But I like your idea about showing them growing up in the sewers.

I like the idea... especially the turtles as kids growing up. There'd be some really interesting stories coming from there.

I don't know about that, in the original comics there are guys with mohawks and SWEAT PANTS! that's how you know it needs to be modernized

j/k ;)
