Was TMNT1 really pefect?

It seems like we just can't fault TMNT1 and it seems like everything about it really was perfect. The characterizations, the fighting, the script, the music, the score, the acting (and voice acting), the puppets, the mood...

I'm trying to find a fault with this movie but I just can't. The only thing I do find wrong is that we've yet to see a director's cut version or even deleted scenes on the DVD releases, which I find ridiculous. But the actual movie as it is, I can't find anything wrong with it no matter how hard I think or try to.

Am I just a totally biased die hard? Or are there TMNT fans out there who DO find a few flaws in TMNT 1? If so, what do you think they are? Was is it about the movie that bugs you?

It all really comes down to one's standards.

Personally, I would have preferred if they made Mike more like his Mirage persona like they did with EVERY OTHER character in the movie. The pizza obsession and surger lingo were also kind of annoying.

Then again, I'm a Mike fan and a Mirage enthusiast. Go figger.

The flaws that I found:

1) Mikey's pizza obsession and surfer lingo (although it could have been a lot worse)
2) Too much comedy during some of the more serious fight scenes (April's Apartment)
3) The Foot should have been more deadly and threatening than just a bunch of thieves. By this I mean the actual Foot ninjas, not the punk teens who they took advantage of.
4) Donatello's technical abilities were only hinted at and never shown. They also didn't delve into his scientific knowledge.

Otherwise this movie was a great adaptation of the Mirage comics, with some minor adjustments.

Yeah, I didn't much like that, either. And, er, I thought the costume for Don coulda been a bit better... but that's just my opinion. Mostly the faces, anyway, but I would have liked a cross between the first movie costumes and the second.

I love this movie, but, yeah. It has it's flaws...

I mean, there's faults that were unintentional, but to many people, the movie is like Mary Poppins. Practically perfect in every way. Boy, that was dumb of me. :D

I dunno, I saw the movie when I was...10? Younger? At the time it rocked bananas - complete awe.
Even going back and watching it 12 years later, I go into fan mode. So I'm sure the movie is flawed but I'm oblivious to those mistakes since so much childhood nostalgia is invested in the film. :D
That and I've never truly been exposed to the comics, so there was nothing for me to compare it to.

Strange, because I generally enjoy ripping films to shreds.
But while I'm thinking about it...some of the lines lean on the corny side. Shredder needs to ditch the sparkly pink jumpsuit. :lol:
And the DVD? Blegh. There does indeed need to be a director's cut, or at least a DVD for the fans. The extras are heinous.

I think some of the fight scenes could have been better. But i guess it was hard for the actors in those giant latex (or whatever they were made of) suits to move around.

The only problems I have with the first movie is how the Foot were idiots when fighting and the fight scenes were sometimes too comedic.

I guess asking for the fight scenes to be more serious in a movie about mutant Turtles that train in ninjitsu is kind of an odd thing to ask, though. :goofygri:

Definitly one of my favorite movies. But one thing I didn't like about the DVD of it was that it was so stupid. It didn't have ANY special features. No commentary, no deleted scenes. They should have put that ending in there that they filmed but cut it out. It would have been after the credits, too. I was very disappointed at te DVD release.

You can find really little goofs where something (hand, weapon, foot soldier etc.) changes position between cuts as well.

But it was an independent film right? And a damn good one at that, I still like it today

I can think of two things that bugged me about the first movie.
1. I hated the fact that when Raph was in a coma they stuck him in A BATHTUB! :x Good idea guys, not only could he remain in a coma but he could drown too! ( the tub had water in it, April sprinkled some on Raph's head in one scene.) I mean I know they're turtles, but you gotta admit that was dumb.
THe second thing that I thought was dumb was the turtle wax joke, I didn't think it was funny and it kinda ruined that scene ( until Raph gave Mikey a noogy and said goodmorning).
More emotion from the others concerning Raphs condition would have been nice too, and seeing the deleted scenes would have been neat.
Well that's all the fault I could find!

As for the turtle wax joke, I kinda liked that scene. Has Casey and April being a bit awkward and then April offers Mikey lotion but he finds the uh...turtle equivalent...turtle wax. And I agree the noogy bit was funny :D

its hard to say if anything was intrinsically wrong looking back on something that is over ten years old. A lot has changed in the movie making world since then...but to me it will always be flawless because i saw it with wide child eyes and a huge child heart. my adult jaded heart couldn't appricate it as much...but thankfully I wasn't jaded then

It was a damn good movie... one of my favs but the part where they go to the farmhouse kind of dragged to me.

I just watched the movie again this weekend and was surprised at how nicely it held up. I mean, all things considered...it was based on a comic book (contrary to what Mr. Ebert thought), it had a low budget independent release, and it lacked any substantial name actors/direction...I'd say it's an amazing movie. In all seriousness, I only attribute some of that sentiment to my fanboy nature =)

I agree that the foot ninja should've been a bit more...formidable, though I do think that the connection between Danny and the Foot was well done. I think my only real gripe with the movie, and this was mentioned in X-Entertainment's hilarious page dedicatd to the film, was Splinter's appearance. He really looked like a mess (even before he was taken hostage), and his fingers looked too much like the digits on the facehuggers from the Alien series. That's just a minor irritation of mine, though...the movie is superb.

I was watching it with my 10 year old brother a few nights ago and I was like "How cool is this, huh?" and he was like "They're just guys in suits..."! My reply... "NO THEY'RE NOT!!!" then I went down to the basement and got an axe...More proof that kids are growing up way too fast. I guess the movies just don't work for this generation like they did for us. Sad. :(

The first was my most fav. With all the action. I have seen this movie many many many many times. It was good plot of shredder causing school dropouts to create a massive crime wave across the city.

I loved how they first showed shredder. In a scene 18 minutes into the movie they showed someone watching a whole display of numerous tvs showing April talking to stearns about the foot clan, and thy showed part spikes his elbow, and then he threw a star at one of the tvs and part of his helmet showed when he said one of my fav quotes "Find her, silence her". Do you think any of the viewers assumed it was shredder. Shredder saying I am your father is a good impersonation of darth vader.

I liked the scene where Danny ran out of the car after the father said he would punish danny after school for stealing. Danny made the right choice abandoning the foot.

One of my most fav scences was when after shredder looked at tatsu angerly for his failure to get the turtles, tatsu grunted in anger and was smashing boxes in his way and went into the locker room and beat all the teenagers up, like throwing one done, bumping two heads together, he then threw the barbels down, then grabbed a member and held him against the locker. A member told tatsu to stop and grabed tatsu, causing tatsu to let go of the teen and beat that teen up and kick him alot until he (tatsu) made him (the foot member) unconsious. I also loved casey wisecracking tatsu and casey hitting tatsu with the club.

I loved the scenes of April pressuring the cheif to do something about the crime, and cheif refused because he belived "A few immegrants were reminded of something that suposedly happend years ago in japan". Stearns is just like cheif wiggum from Simpsons. There was hint of something too: Danny got arrested, stearns called mr. pennington, danny was with charles in the morning and in the morning mr. pennington told april to get off the story, and stearns yelled out(yelling pennington I thought we had a deal) pennington when april said in the news that she doubts stearns was taking the connection(foot clan and the crime wave) serously, stearns must have made a deal with pennington that he will let DAnny go if he agrees to get April off his back.

That was a good ending for shredder of falling in the trash compactor, I loved that scene too. Everybody at school remembers shredder falling in the trash compactor. It was funny when Casey said oops. Danny's change of heart was good. I loved Don's your a chlatrophobic and casey saying want a fist in the mouth. I LOVED EVERY BIT OF THE MOVIE. I loved the fights in the apartment, escpecailly when the turtles fell down the next floor to find tatsu and more foot soilders waiting. That was neat of where tatsu just opened his hand, signalling the foot to attack. They are all skilled.

Shredder was more serious than the old cartoon shredder. Shredder was able to overcome the turtles and was not inept like the old cartoon shredder.

I could not understand the do you like penicellian on your pizza and Don and mikey making the taps sound. I REALLY LOVED THE ACTOR THAT PLAYED DON in the FIRST BETTER THAN THE 2nd.

While watching the turtles 2003 series, I realised that alot from the movie was taken out of the comics, meaning the movie was a little closer to the comics than the cartoon series around the time of the movie, They had april as a reporter, but for channel 3 news. There was no bebop rocksteady, robotic foot soilders(they had foot soilders as people dressed up), krang or technodrome.

Well its not like he tripped and went head first into the sewer water, flinging April over the side. :D THAT would have been a problem, yes. If it wasn't glaringly obvious, then stumbles, no biggie. I mean, you could look at it from the flip side and think the stumble kind of implies hurriedness, a rushed feeling - I mean for the love of pete he wasn't being careful at all because he led the foot right to their lair! :lol: So the stumble, maybe a mistake, but one that could be used to add to the mood of the moment to show that he's really at a loss for what to do and isn't thinking so much as just acting on gut feeling.

It took me year to figure out that joke! I didn't know penicelllian came from mold and hence the death of the pizza. :tdead: Things really do get better with age. Well, some movies maybe, but not pizza.

I used to believe in the perfection of the first Ninja Turtle movie untill I heard comments from non-fans. From only watching the movie they thought Raph was the leader, not Leo. I can see that now. I just know so it hadn't come to my attention before but you get a hint in the Turtle Power rap. "Raphael, he's the leader of the group..." Eeek! And no hint of Don's genius. Plenty of hot-headdedness for Raph. The movie just needed to be longer for proper charater development for the non-fan. All us hardcores could have used an extra hour in the movie theater to drool. :trazz:
