I disagree. Even the use of wider levels, while incorporating a "dash" button is a great elevation and will probably make crowd-control much more engaging, in combination with having more enemies on screen.

Then each turtle having a unique move-set is another huge innovation for tmnt beat-em-ups. Not only unique move-sets, but "charge attacks" and two types of jump-attacks.

Double-jump is going to greatly increase the feeling of freedom, which probably also plays into the larger emphasis on mobility and gameplay based around crowd-control.

The way they are actually taking care and incorporating a story that plays out between the levels, like mini-episodes is new.

The ability to level up will mean they will have to find new ways to balance the game.

Having 20 bosses already indicates a larger variety of enemies.

Yeah, those are all big innovations in terms of TMNT beat-em-up games from the past.

Yeah, I agree with this. Which is why I'm looking forward to this game quite a bit now. At first, I thought it'd just be a TiT clone, which doesn't greatly interest me.

Since Zelda Breath of the Wild 2 was delayed to 2023, it's ironic how this TMNT game and the collection of the classic games are my most anticipated games of 2022:

- Only major PS4/PS5 game I am looking forward to is the God of War sequel, which of course will be great. Also finished Horizon: Forbidden West. Haven't tried Elden Ring yet.

- Most major games were delayed to 2023 or have no release date, Sony's Spiderman 2 and Wolverine game are in 2023, the next FF7 is not till next year, the next Batman Gotham Knights game is not till 2023, etc.

- From Nintendo I already have Legends Arceus and Kirby, looking forward to Mario and Rabbids 2 but not much else. Seems like most of Nintendo's releases this year will be more ports/remasters of old Wii and Wii-U games besides sports spinoffs.

Some random tidbits on the game (mostly voice acting and animations) from the TributeGames Discord by developers:

From YannickBelzil:

Quote:

"The big surprise was the original VA returning for the Turtles (and Bebop & Rocksteady) the rest of the cast are not (as far as I know) talent from previous incarnations of TMNT, just really good actors Dotemu found for us."

"All of our VO stuff is original, no sampling from the show. The actors are GREAT and knew exactly what type of voice to shoot for."

"I will tell you the main direction I gave to Katherine, the April VA: 'Imagine you're in the Anchorman news anchor fight scene'"

"Tried to put a lot of one-liners but you always have to be mindful that you're essentially writing 'shouts' aka soundbytes that go very by very quickly for most of the game. There are a couple of longer lines here and there though."

"There are a couple of instances where we had every Turtle record the same line!
There is no 'MY TOES' because we don't have that type of hazard in the game though."

"I want to manage expectations though: there aren't big dialogue scenes or anything, it's really 'seasoning' for the game, as if they had been available (or the technology had been better) to do that in the arcade game or Turtle In Time"

[On cutscenes] "it's like we've seen in the gameplay videos. We are staying close to the classic arcade rhythm of the game, which means, not too much slowing down for extended story stuff"

[Easter Egg Revealed]
Spoiler:
"Weird Pizza To Go" reference to "Pizza By the Shred" episode

"I think Nickelodeon likes it when there are direct references to the toys! But we're mostly cartoon-first when it comes to put characters in the game. If we get to do more, who knows?"
From Kokonaught:
Quote:

[On Roadkill Rodney attacks] "what's in the pax demo is their moveset : restraining lasso from afar and rapid whip arms attacks upclose, no electrified lasso. But don't worry, there's plenty of electrifying attacks later in the game."

"I fought for 'My toes' but it didn't make it in ???? Lots of very fun players hitstun animations in the game still"

[On hit stun animations] "what's been seen ingame already :
-the 3 standing hitstun variations + the one when hit from behind
-the 2 knockdown (down and KO)
-the flatten knockdown
-the various grabs (by a foot soldier, a lasso, bitten by a mouser or a rat, eaten whole by a mother mouser...)
-the burnt to a crisp hitstun"

"the turtles also have 2 unused stun/knockdown anims. Slight miscommunication about the anim needs and they didn't find a use in the end, but I believe they're still in the data ahah, they might resurface one day (it's minor though, no hidden 'my toes', sorry)"

[Confirmation that Turtle tongues displayed during hit stun animations match their respective bandana colors] "they share the same color in the anim file, and the game swaps those to their respective colors. We debated around 10 seconds with Adam if we should add a few colors for the tongues but opted against it (probably laziness) . . .that variation of April's (and Splinter's) hitstun doesn't involve them sticking their tongues out unfortunately ahah"

"[all playable characters] get a 'hit in the back' hitstun"

"foot soldiers are about the same size while bosses are way bigger (though we used the 200*200 canvas most of the time for them too I believe"
From jfmajor:
Quote:

"Not the best person to answer this. But most of the turtles animations are done in a 200x200
Leo's idle is roughly 62x76 . . . but we don't constrain ourselves to sprite cells"

New BTS video, confirming Wingnut as well as showcasing more new footage, including some of the Story Mode's World Map and the previously-confirmed Rat King, Groundchuck/Dirtbag, and Tempestra/Tokka/Rahzar boss fights. Not only that, but Stage 8 and 9's names are also revealed. They're called Panic in the Sky and Crisis at Coney Island respectively.

No way bro, this is the next level, revolutionary, industry defining game we've been waiting for. I think it'll get the award for greatest game ever. This gonna be bigger than Pong, asteroids, may even dethtone the pac.

Nothing much. Just a new God of War if it doesn't get delayed to 2023. The Gotham Knights game but recent previews have said it doesn't look too hot and may be delayed. Horizon: Forbidden West and Elden Ring were the only notable releases this year so far.

On the Nintendo side there's Pokemon games, Kirby, Mario and Rabbids 2, and just the usual RPG's (Fire Emblem/Xenoblade 3) and Splatoon games but those don't interest me. They'll probably port over more old Zelda games like Wind Waker/Twilight Princess again to make up for Breath of the Wild 2 being delayed to next year.

Andrew NDB 05-19-2022 09:56 PM

Metroid Dread. There you go. Not a retro game and newly innovative. Dying Light 2 -- HUGE! And incredibly immersive.

This is like a fart in the wind next to them. And again, the only people who are going to even play this game are TMNT fans from the 90s and TMNT fans from the 90s that liked the TMNT beat'em ups. You aren't going to see a lot of kids playing a 16 bit-looking throwback thing.

Leo656 05-19-2022 10:05 PM

Kids don't give a crap about Metroid either. Just sayin'. Nobody under 35 is gonna be playing that one.

CyberCubed 05-19-2022 10:06 PM

Even then Metroid Dread came out last October, the game has been out for 7 months. I thought we were talking about 2022 games.

That's why I put the "?" After the name.
But You're right. Maybe they aren't.

CyberCubed 05-21-2022 11:07 PM

For bosses we're missing Baxter, Slash and Leatherhead so far, but I have a hard time seeing them being excluded. They're too popular/iconic to pass up. They seem to be including most bosses from past games as long as they appeared in the show, remember Groundchuck and Dirtbag were in TMNT III on NES.

I don't expect to see any Konami created characters though so all those TMNT II NES bosses won't be included like the panda guy from the ice level or the samurai robot with the head that comes off.

We never had Chrome Dome in a beat 'em up game though and it would be cool to see him.

The only Konami created character in the old series was Sisyphus on TMNT TF on Sega Genesis. Aska was supposed to be Mitsu from the third movie, and the characters you speak of, white bear (not panda) Tora and samurai-ghost (?) Shogun were created by creators of TMNT themselves.

But I don't see chances of them returning either.

The reveal trailer showed Chrome Dome, Baxter Stockman and Zarax. So it make sense to see them as bosses. :)

CyberCubed 05-22-2022 11:05 AM

So who hasn't been seen at all Leatherhead and Slash?

I hope we get Traag or Granitor as bosses again too, we haven't had boss fights with them since TMNT II.

Aska appears to be based on Mitsu but since she isn't, she's still technically am original character. Tora and the ghost samurai as ar as I'm aware also seem to belong to Konami but I don't think the ownership of any of those characters is clear on who owns them.

Same as with the Next Mutation characters, all speculation from fans

Yeah, the "art booklet" sounds like a great deal for the Standard Edition, although I am curious if the "Pocket Guide" shown in the Sig. Edition is the same thing, an alternative, or an additional perk.

I'm buying this day one, so I'm not gonna do the Limited Run Games thing. I'd be stuck waiting for months.

CyberCubed 05-25-2022 06:32 AM

So is this not getting a standard retail release on day 1? Meaning just the game in box? Do you have to wait months?

RaphaelinSTL 05-25-2022 08:50 AM

I guess we'll know more during the Limited Run showcase that airs on June 6th (they've been teasing the release date will finally be revealed), but what I want to know is if this physical release will come out on the same day it drops on the digital stores.

Or is this going to be something where the game comes out either in June or August, but the physical games are in production and not available until like the fall ... and that's just even the standard release. With Limited Run Games, you'll pre order the collector's edition in June and maybe, hopefully see it around the same time next year.

oldmanwinters 05-25-2022 08:51 AM

I'm sure the details and release date will be confirmed on June 6, but as I understood the LimitedRun's post, the physical game will be sold in retail stores, which has been a precedent in some of their other releases. I ASSUME, the physical releases (standard edition) will coincide with launch day, but I guess we will have to wait to find out.

EDIT:
Here is the comment:

Hoping that's the case! Personally would rather have this game on physical without having to double dip with digital first from the FOMO until the physical game comes in.

That said, what have people down in that situation where they pre order a physical copy down the road of a game they can buy digitally? Just not open their new physical copy or never play it?

With the Switch I know you have to be really mindful of in GB for storage when it comes to physical vs. digital, even for a game like this.
