So… will the $35 standard physical version be out this week or is that weeks/months away like the special editions?

Unfortunately, like I feared, the standard edition will be months away from availability. Considerably less so than the special editions, but still ... I'm shocked there wasn't as much emphasis on getting a physical edition out on the same day. Oh well.

Also, while there might not be options for new costume designs for the characters, DLC might include additional characters to play as down the road.

Though truthfully, I'd even be okay with color palette swaps ... give me a 1990 look with the brown knee pads and elbow pads and I'm in heaen.

Anything is possible if there's enough money behind the corporate request.

No DLC at all is odd. Maybe they'll change their minds if it sells well.

Sequel makes more sense then DLC to me.

I'm hoping this sells well and they make a AAA sequel. Definitely feels like they are testing the waters with all the promotion for this game and the release of the Cowabunga Collection. And the response has been great so far.

Yes!

Glad to see the reaction so overwhelmingly positive and I can only imagine that it will continue to grow. Sales are apparently really well for Limited Run Games too for the physical copies, so it's safe to bet that this game is a success.

Honestly this was all I ever wanted for a TMNT game, a fun arcade love letter with modern day implementation. The fact that I'm getting this AND a collection of the classic games in one year is wild to me.

Already have it preloaded on my Switch, and can't wait to play it. I assume it'll be available tomorrow morning? Would love a midnight drop, but I doubt that will happen.

Ninjinister 06-15-2022 10:39 AM

Streets of Rage 4 had like the best DLC I can remember. 3 characters plus one unlockable, extensive practice mode, and a survival mode that actually was fun, all for $8. I hope this gets something like that.

CyberCubed 06-15-2022 12:39 PM

This is getting rave reviews everywhere online. Besides Elden Ring this is easily the best game of 2022 so far. Never in a million years would I believe a new Ninja turtles game would be one of the best games on modern consoles. Sometimes dreams really do come true.

I've only heard DotEmu confirmed launch time as 9am ET (6am PDT), so no midnight runs.

AquaParade 06-15-2022 08:43 PM

I think this well sell well. They are promoting the hell out of it and there is near unanimous excitement online.

It's nice to see Nick reaping the rewards of putting out quality stuff like this and The Last Ronin, after going down a pretty dark path with PD films and Rise...

The figures have exploded as well. Maybe they are starting to "get it". Honestly, it's not that bad being a TMNT fan lately, relatively speaking.
A kick-ass story from the creator this all started with, a high-quality new video game that builds off the legacy of tmnt games, and great figures for practically any character you can think of - the amount of party wagons being sold is just silly.

If we had a film that was of the same quality as all this, we'd be in a golden era.
Just my opinion, anyway. Depends what you like.

Maybe with the renewed interest for Street Fighter with its 6th iteration (and, Killer Instinct 2, potentially by Namco, in the horizon), we may also oneday receive a AAA TMNT fighting game, one that is made from the ground up (as opposed to Brawlhalla, Nickelodeon All-Star Brawl or Injustice 2).

Totally agree with all of this. It's hilarious how salty some people were on this game when it was announced, but it's wild what you can achieve when you have a formula that works and you just extend and expand upon it.

Really does feel like a unique fourth wave of Turtle Mania brought on by more people in the adult group of fans, doesn't it? Collectible figures are going nuts and selling like crazy, games are catered to the older fans, (with a new game getting the most critically adored scores in years and an incredible collection of the classic games), the Last Ronin had great coverage and just even in the past five years they've been a part of the DC world with Injustice 2 and the Batman crossover animated movie.

All that being said, MAN — my "You cannot play this software yet." pop up I keep getting when trying to boot up Shredder's Revenge on my Switch right now is killin' me, lol.

I still say you guys are sniffing the green (or maybe the white) about this game. Yes, you and I will have nice retro feels playing it, as some kind of -- really proper -- sequel to the old Konami games from the 90s. A handful of kids these days might be curious about it, but not that curious. And yes, reviewers in their 40s who played the old games will give it high marks... but that's about it, guys. I'm glad it's coming out but you folks talking about it as if it's competition for modern games are delusional.

If they ditched the 16 bit pixel vibe and treated it like Street Fighter 4 or 5's engine it might have had a chance at transcending but probably not even then. It's still walk left to right mashing two and sometimes three buttons. This isn't really a thing anymore.

You probably despise it so much cause it’s OT, like you always do hating on anything OT lmao. :tlol:

The game has been trending a lot and still is trending right now on twitter. Word of mouth is good for this game so far. Who cares about it being a thing or not. If it is, cool, if it’s not at least we get a fun game and we’re having a good time. :twink:

Ninjinister 06-16-2022 03:54 AM

I was kind of sad that I wouldn't have the opportunity to get this because of financial reasons, but I realized I had a free three months of gamepass sitting in my inbox, so away I go!

He also has this weird mad-on against the entire brawler genre, as well as just has proven time and time again he doesn't know a goddamn thing about video games in general.

Leo656 06-16-2022 03:57 AM

I wouldn't be shocked to see it go either way, but I kinda feel like you do, Andrew, only maybe less strongly or harshly about it. I still love side-scrolling beat-'em-ups as much as I ever did. I mean, I spent almost half a year playing nothing but Arkham games, and every minute of that was grand but after All That I'm actually very, VERY in the mood for some time spent "just walking left-to-right and mashing two buttons". I'm messing with a few right now.

But I also do think some people are over-selling it and maybe setting expectations too high. But that's just calling it from where I sit, nobody I talk to outside of this place and the He-Man board knows or is talking about the game, not even the "TMNT fans", generally. But I mean, this isn't even sh*t-talk but most people I know aren't online as much as y'all are, and less than I am even. So that's a variable. It's just weird that even certain people I know with TMNT tattoos have no idea this (or the compilation) is even coming out unless I bring it up. I agree with Andrew insofar as there's definitely a positive "buzz" but I think it's kind of centralized among a certain core group of people, and I'm not entirely sure that group is as big as people within that group think it is.

But I mean, we'll see, and it will be interesting to see how it turns out, sales-wise. I have no emotional investment in how well it sells, my only concern is in getting to play it and have fun with it. I'm not even really a TMNT fan anymore, so I don't care about the game's relationship with the success of the larger brand. I just care that it looks like a good enough "spiritual sequel" to the games I played to death as a kid and expect to have some fun with it. But I am curious to see whether it does as well as people hope. I wouldn't be outright shocked, but I might be a little bit surprised.

I won't be playing it for a bit yet. Got some bills to sort out first, and a nagging legal matter. Somewhere soon down the line, though. Looking forward to it.

Not entirely accurate. I've disagreed with a lot of his tastes and opinions, often rather strongly, but I've definitely seen Andrew make a lot of incredibly astute observations on the subject over the years all the same.

He seemingly cares way more about things like graphics and modern tech/mechanics than I do or ever will but that's a guy's prerogative. He's been gaming at least almost as long as I have, if not as long (I started around '85 at the latest) so I know he knows about the old school, even if he prefers the new school.

His seeming hatred for side-scrollers and retro-style games rankles me a bit as well but I'm not gonna resort to libelous accusations over it. C'mon, be nice. He's not wrong that it's a very niche genre in 2022. Sometimes they do well, sometimes they get ignored. We'll see what happens.

AquaParade 06-16-2022 04:37 AM

Andrew, I think you’re overthinking this. It’s a fun, high-quality game that people can enjoy. It’s a quality tmnt product, in a sea of mostly crap. It’s okay to look forward to stuff like this and celebrate the release.

No one is pretending it’s a AAA title. Not everything needs to be. But with the reception and praise this is receiving, it’s possible we see one in the future.
At the same time, this isn’t a cheap cash grab either, so there is plenty of reason to look forward to it.

I get you aren’t into this genre so much, but you seem annoyed that other people are, by your posts in this thread, quite honestly. Maybe it’s just not your thing.

Shark_Blade 06-16-2022 10:13 AM

So I used Mikey first and picked the hardest difficulty. We didn’t beat Bebop the first time and the challenge does feel good.

On the second round I picked April and wow… she can chain flying-kick combo and she’s the fastest character in the game! We had so much fun and laughing a lot. Playing with others is such joy because if one of you is low on health, you can high five to transfer some health or if you got knocked out, there’s a countdown to give your partner a chance to revive you (using pizza lol).

Later on I tried using Splinter but he’s so slow compared to April so I changed back to her :tlol:. Some players might enjoy slow paced (yet the most powerful) character like Splinter but I prefer the speedy type.

I didn’t see Casey tho, guess he’ll be unlockable later on.

That's how I feel about this too. I expect to get it, try it out a few times and revel in the pixelated wish-fulfillment of basically having "TMNT Arcade" but with more playable characters.

After that it will become a chore to play and hopefully I got my mild entertainment out of it. It's clearly not a life-changing game, but more of the "wish fulfillment from childhood" merchandise that generation X has been seeing for the last 5 years or so.

Not really. And I don't despise it at all -- I've said I'll be playing it. What I'm responding to is you guys pretending like a somewhat spruced up arcade game from 1989 is going to be same thing as, like, Rockstar dropping Grand Theft Auto VI.

It's hysterical and stupid.

I look at it like, you know, take your Contra-type 2D sidescroller shooter games. They can be fun, they can be polished for modern consoles... but they're still inherently a relic and new ones of it will never make anywhere close to mega-millions. Gamers today outside of little niche pockets expect more than to be walking in a line and pressing a couple of buttons. I hate to be the one to break it to you. There's been advancements. With those advancements, increased expectations.

Quote:

That's pretty weird to say, considering how much I've played over the decades. And I have every system. And just about every month I'm playing a brand new game. Even now, I'm playing the f*** out of the new Evil Dead game, and it's awesome.

It's not about what I like, I'm merely commenting on the perceived impact this game is going to have. Most video gamers are not people in their 40s who want to throw money at the kind of games we played in 1992. I have no idea why this is somehow crazy talk.

Yeah. That's fair to say. Like "Double Dragon 4" or something. And people don't like when I bring it up, but if there was this huge thirst for something like "Shredder's Revenge" from average gamers from today, surely "Turtles in Time: Re-Shelled" for the then-next gen consoles would have done more than go "plop!" when it came out. And that was in 2009. It's 2022. Are we to think that more people want games like that since 2009, and not even less?

No sh**. Where am I saying that it's not? I'm just saying it's not going to be the second coming of Moses, and you guys are saying I'm wrong.

Now, I'm sure it will sell well within the modest expectations of the developer. And it was smart to include the collector's market with the more expensive edition, as I'm sure they'll sell at least a couple hundred of it.

Good question. I think it's on PC Gamepass...so maybe.

Edit: Andrew, I think you're exaggerating my/our point to make your point.

No one expects this to sell like Grand Theft Auto, or even the hottest AAA game of the month, but it's fair to say the game is getting a lot of attention and will probably outdo itself, in terms of engagement. If you don't think this game is getting a lot of hype in the gaming community, you're not looking in the right places.
And remember, your FB feed is not a good indicator of anything except how crazy the people you associate yourself with are.

So in regards to how the game will be received, I'm not sure what your point is. Is it "This game won't sell as much as you expect! It's not going to sell as many copies as the highest selling game of all time, GTA."
I mean, no one has actually indicated exactly how well they think this game will do, so telling everyone "it won't sell as much as you think" is sort of dumb.

I played one level and it kicks the crap out of Turtles in Time. The gameplay is more engaging, and if they ramp it up from here, it’s going to be legit fun.

The gameplay just isn’t that engaging in the old TMNT games, imo. This actually feels like it takes some thought. There are more options at your disposal in terms of combat - a bigger move set.
There are three difficulty levels, though I’m not yet sure how they’re balanced.
And obviously everything looks and sounds great.

Solid first impression. Really happy with it.

I dunno... I think the gameplay is over-reliant on the backflip, which is pretty much temporary invincibility except for holes or stage obstacles.

Don't get me wrong, the game's great! But I don't yet know which game I'd prefer to play if I could only have one for all eternity.
