Ninja Turtles and the furry fandom

Do you think the franchise is popular among the fandom?

neatoman 04-22-2020 06:54 PM

Popular? No idea. Signigant overlap between the fandoms would not surprise me though.

Egon1982 04-22-2020 08:03 PM

I happen to be a furry fan myself and a brony and been in the furry fandom since the 90s and brony fandom since 2011 and TMNT fandom since 1987.

They are no different than Japanimation fans, Trekkies, Whovians, Star Warriors (Star Wars fans) etc.

We are all shocked and amazed.

Not judging, just... pretty sure everybody here already got the memo, broski. :trazz:

That is nothing to be proud of, to say the least.
But it also explains a lot.

I'unno, man... nowadays I'm more likely to cop to watching MLP: FiM than I am to admitting to being a Turtles fan. Especially with stuff like Rise and the BayTurtles flicks leaving such a rancid stink.

Like if I tell someone I like MLP, the absolute worst thing that's gonna happen is they're gonna try and show me porn. If I say I like TMNT, someone who doesn't know any better usually tries to rope me into a conversation about Rise or the BayTurtles movies. And I'd rather take my chances with the person(s) offering to show me porn. It's less likely to cause brain damage than listening to someone defend BayTurtles.

Now, once upon a time, I had no shame in being a TMNT fan. Then Nick came along and wrecked everything, and now I don't claim that sh*t AT ALL outside of this place. :trazz:

Also, if I'm being fully honest... FiM honestly entertained me way more than the Nick TMNT show did. I won't argue with anyone who sees it differently, I personally just laughed way more often and way harder at FiM. If you told me in 2009 that this would be my stated opinion of preference between the two, I'd have smacked you, but here we are. Everything has sh*tty fans; I just think it was a more entertaining show. Or at least "wittier". Certainly the last place I'd ever have expected to see a Clockwork Orange gag, but again, here we are.

Maybe it's as simple as with one show, I went into it expecting a lot and was mostly let down, and with the other, I expected absolutely nothing and was repeatedly given gold. Certainly, that could be it.

FredWolfLeonardo 04-23-2020 04:58 AM

This could turn into nothing but a My Little Pony appreciation thread and I'm completely OK with that.

Leo656 04-23-2020 05:00 AM

I'll give you absolutely nothing at all to start one, brother.

That's not true... I'll give you my sincerest and most heartfelt appreciation and support.

...So, less than nothing.

You should still do it anyway.

EDIT: True story, I spent a good hour earlier watching YouTube videos of "selectively censored" MLP clips and I frankly don't know how I missed seeing them until now. Nothing makes a fun, wholesome show even better than splicing in "Bleeps" over otherwise-innocent clips of dialog.

Fluttershy: "I've never [BLEEP] a baby dragon before!"
Aaaaaand, now I'm dead.

Agreed. I’ve no problem with it, though.

The OP's question is legit: both the old TMNT Archie Comics and the 2K12 version of TMNT had their own versions of The Mighty Mutanimals.

As for the franchise being popular within the Furry Fandom, FurAffinity can definitely answer that question for you.

lonewarrior20 04-23-2020 06:18 AM

It was catwoman april that did it for me. At the very least it got me intrested in transformation. I know he's not on here but thanks werekatt for your site.

I'd seriously love to know how well issues of TMNT Adventures with Ninjara on the cover sold compared to ones without her within the same timeframe. I'd assume that overall sales were much higher early in the book's run, and it's all probably pretty steady and even throughout, but once she became established I'd be interested in knowing whether she actually helped push any issues or not.

They were never shy about putting her "front and center", so to speak, so I'm sure there's a lot to look at there, data-wise.

Also, Ninjara had a short run in "Furrlough", which is a furry anthology comic book (apparently a mostly PG-13 book, but still), so... I think it's safe to say there's some heavy cross-over between fandoms. I mean, she's not a "TMNT character" in any but the one universe, but she's definitely "TMNT-adjacent".

neatoman 04-23-2020 06:56 AM

Come to think of it, I did once see someone online describe Bebop and Rocksteady as "Furry Bara Bait". In case you don't know, "Bara" is basically manga about the Bear sub-culture. Which... I mean... Makes sense... It's not like that sort of thing hasn't been alluded to in the official material.

Edit: Yes, I know furry itself isn't inherently a gay thing or a pornographic thing, I'm just pointing to an instance when someone directly referred to an aspect of TMNT in comparison to furry art.

Leo656 04-23-2020 07:01 AM

Wow... I'm never gonna look at them the same way again. Thanks, bozo. :trazz:

Also, there's a person here who creates Tags and believes in labeling people. For shame. Labels divide people, sir.

EDIT: Screw your edit, they're gay in my headcanon now because I think it's hilarious, and just explains, like, so much.

I want someone to do a dissertation on the two completely distinctive types of yearning in Rocksteady's eyes in each of the two pictures. There's a lot to unpack, there. You can tell which one of them is more sensitive in that Bebop chooses to hide his eyes, symbolic of the way he also likely hides his emotions, whereas Rocksteady just lets it all out with no restraint.

Yeah, definitely a lot to unpack there.

Any anthropomorphic animals franchise is going to have a bunch of furries who are into it as well by definition of their likes. When the furry fandom has too much of a foothold on that franchise is when it gets ruined since it becomes something different than what originally intended.

Galactus 04-23-2020 08:59 AM

I'd be gobsmacked if it wasn't.

To each their own and I'd rather have them than the weird T-cest people particularly the strain of them that emerged during the two Platinum Dunes movies. Like any T-cest art you used to stumble upon before that if you take away the idea that they are brothers you could almost find it cute with them hugging and kissing but around the time of both PD movies if you searced fir 'TMNT' on Twitter you'd get tons of art of the Bay turtles in hardcore porn settings. Like why would you DO THAT? Especially with THOSE turtles and put it on Twitter. Like seriously da fuq?

I have to wonder what the mental block is that leads someone to create provocative internet identities with simplistic and annoying caricature personalities such as Super Goku, Egon1982 & Mikey0.

Like.... what kind of weird psychosis is this? It's like a mouth breather engineering a mouth breather personality of only one magnitude greater than their own.

Absolutely. One of the main TMNT staples is that it has a lot of mutant animal characters. And that what attracts it to the furry fandom.

The mutant animals are a lot more prominent thanks to IDW's TMNT comics.

The Super Goku sorts definitely seem like an online expression of a really compulsive urge to act out antisocial behaviors. :tconfuse:

I dunno, this here just seems imo more like relatively innocent validation seeking...albeit directed at an audience that, for the majority, doesn't have much appreciation for that topic. lol

As to the actual topic... I imagine there is undoubtedly some crossover for the "furry" types who happen to be into reptiles. Though there is a pretty obvious broad separation between the regular (for lack of a better word) fans of the TMNT and fans that are drawn to them specifically on the basis of the "furry" thing.

Now my question is... are Turtles that lean more human just as or not as appealing to furry types than designs that are more animalistic? I'd have thought that the PD boys, leaning a more human than typical, would be a lot less "furry" than, say, some more beast-like designs you might find in some fan art. (Though maybe the PD guys seem to be used more by that "bara" interest, like B&R there, not so much the furry fans.)

Attention seeking, I guess.

Although furries are quite sick people according to what I know of them. So they got no appreciation from me.
