This is so awesome. Its SOOO much more fun to do combos in this game. You domt feel like you're just mashing, even though mashing works fine. You get more out of being strategic and timing your juggles and hits, launching supers etc.

Also, I love the side missions and the aspect of leveling up each turtle. You start at level 1 (XP Wise) with each, but as you get farther with one turtle it incentivizes you to stick with them, making multiple playthroughs have a purpose.

Have not tried online yet.

There are some deep vut references in here that im sure some are gonna love, too! :D

the soundtrack...my GOD it's good.

CyberCubed 06-16-2022 08:14 PM

If there's one minor quibble I have, I wish the "collectables" in each level were more unique or easter eggs to various episodes. Instead it's just collecting Newspapers for Vernon or Irma's diaries or bugs, etc. I wish each level had 3 unique collectables from an episode (like Donatello's personality alternator machine, Raphael's gag books, or Michelangelo's pets like his fish or parrot from those eps, or so forth), and each stage would have unique collectables referencing some history from the show.

Definitely could be better. Irma has unique soundclips when you get them but they cannot be replayed once collected. The newspapers and tapes should be something you actually view not just a number quota

I just completed the entire game on story mode. I didn’t memorize all the level names yet but I think I remember most of the bosses. Here is what I remember:

Spoiler:
Level 1 boss: Bebop
Level 2 boss: Rocksteady
Level 3 boss: a vehicle I think is carrying Bebop and Rocksteady
Level 4 boss: Groundchuck and Dirtbag
I forgot the next order so I’m just guessing the next bosses are Bebop and Rocksteady together, the Rat King, Tempestra, Leatherhead, Wingnut, Baxter Stockman, Slash, I might have forgotten some
Level 14: Planet Ballarophon in Dimension X, the bosses are General Traag and Chromedome
Level 15: Volcano asteroid in Dimension X where the Technodrome was stuck in season 4 of the Fred Wolf show, bosses: Krang and Shredder
Level 16: just bosses Krang and super Shredder

There's 16 stages. Here's the boss list:

Spoiler:
Bebop
Rocksteady
Bebop/Rocksteady in the car/truck from TMNT III NES
Rat King
Groundchuck and Dirtbag
Tempestra with Rahzar and Tokka
Leatherhead
Wingnut (no Screwloose)
Metalhead
Triceraton Leader Zorax
Baxter Stockman
General Traag
Slash (in his original cartoon design, which was a surprise and not the Archie version)
Chrome Dome
Krang
Shredder
Super Shredder

That's all unless I missed someone, definitely a few surprises I wasn't expecting and some bosses we haven't had since the NES era.

Seems like they also had a rule that only characters who appeared in the original cartoon could appear, so don't expect any Archie characters or Playmates Toy characters unless they were in the show, and with their OT designs if they do.

sdp 06-16-2022 11:51 PM

Unlike the Konami games which were always a hybrid, this game is strictly a 1987 video game, in fact we could argue the first one based on the original cartoon. I guess because of this it means that we finally get to see
Spoiler:
Super Shredder
in the original 1987 continuity.

FredWolfLeonardo 06-17-2022 12:14 AM

I've always wondered what Super Shredder would've looked like in the Original Cartoon. While I prefer that OT Shredder not lose his handsome and clean look, my morbid curiosity is intrigued all the same since his transformation would probably be the most unexpected and shocking.

Leo656 06-17-2022 12:53 AM

But he wouldn't be Kevin Nash under there, it wouldn't be the same.

I think "just Krang" is underselling it

Spoiler:
Krang retrofits the Statue of Liberty with pieces that look like his Android Body, and it's the Statue of Tyranny

It's an easy as hell fight but it's visually impressive and worth a chuckle.

So I guess... let's sound off? Who's bought it for what system, who wants to add who and have a go at things.

AquaParade 06-17-2022 04:27 AM

Played about half of story mode and it's really fun.
It's nice to be getting tmnt stuff that appeals to me again, between this and TLR.

It's actually looking like Arcade mode might provide a greater challenge, so I'm looking forward to tackling that with some friends.

I think they need to adjust the taunt mechanic though. A little too easy to abuse outside of boss battles.

Holy hell, this was super impressive. The basic mechanics are obviously based on the arcade/turtles-in-time controls, but with much more added depth. The roll/dodge mechanic becomes useful like in a modern game. Combos and team combos are also pretty interesting. Lots of variation between the character's moves instead of just their reach (for instance, their different uppercuts).

I also appreciated that the bosses carried over a lot of attack patterns from the old games, but then built on them. Some of their weak points are maybe over-telegraphed, but it's sometimes better than the old bosses. Also liked the new pizza pickups (party health, special booster). Lots of cool little touches and easter eggs everywhere that I haven't even begun to dig into.

I've always enjoyed replaying Turtles in Time. To me, it's kind of how the old FredWolf/Playmates era exists in memory and nostalgia: actually cool, action packed, brutal fighting with a sweet soundtrack. And that's obviously not what you experience when you rewatch the Fred Wolf cartoon as an adult, but the beat-em-up games are a better way to revisit the era. And this one is a great love letter to the era of games and cartoons, with mechanics that hold their own regardless of the nostalgia.

I had a similar thought the other day when deciding to purchase a physical copy of this game for my collection, which is something I very rarely do. I thought that if I was going to have anything from the Fred Wolf era, the games would, oddly enough, probably be the best representation.

Even though it's sort of immeasurable, this is probably the highest quality "Fred Wolf TMNT" product we have, in my mind. Kind of funny.

oldmanwinters 06-17-2022 08:15 AM

Seems to me
Spoiler:
Metalhead
would be a great choice as a future playable character since so much of his sprite work is already in the game. And the story mode reveals
Spoiler:
he had only been reprogrammed to fight the Turtles then makes nice with them in the following cutscene.

I think that would be very reminiscent of how DotEmu handled Estel Aguirre's role in Streets of Rage 4.

Nickokapo 06-17-2022 07:23 PM

Hello!My Steam ID is:

nickokapo

Would anybody please like to add me?I would love to play with some fellow dromers :toops: thank you.

You can pick whichever mode you like, arcade or story, i don't really care as it is mostly the same to me. And don't be afraid of me holding you back, i have a level 10 leonardo in story mode (But you can pick leo if you want, i have a level 10 April O'Neil i can use instead, i actually like her better than leo gameplay-wise, and am currently leveing up Casey Jones to level 10, too. Same goes for Arcade mode, you can pick Leo, it is not really a character i main in any of the turtle games to begin with.)

Andrew NDB 06-17-2022 08:34 PM

So how is the difficulty? Can you set how many lives you get? Is anybody playing through and running out of lives before they can beat the game?

Nickokapo 06-17-2022 08:53 PM

There are 3 levels of difficulty you can choose:
Chill (Easy)
Okay (Normal)
Gnarly (Hard)
In "Story Mode" you do not have to worry much about running out of lives, as you progress, your character will develop a higher level rank, and the placement of the life pizzas should be placed conveniently and plenty just enough to keep you going. If you do happen to lose all lives in story mode, you can continue from the last stage you last played, and the progress is saved, so you can revisit it again with a full set of lives at any time, aswell as go back to easier levels, grind to power up your character, then come back to it again, because you can pick every stage you ever played so far, in any order, and replay it to your heart's content. You can also earn additional lives and accumulate them.
The arcade mode is different, you have a set number of lives, once they run out, it is game over and you have to start from stage 1, however, there is a key feature of co-op play (Which is also featured in story mode, but not as important as in arcade mode, i feel)
When your life bar gets depleted you get knocked out for 9 seconds before actually losing a life. This is where the feature for other players reviving you comes into play, at any point you can approach the dying character and hold a button for a few seconds to feed him life pizza, if you do this before the counter reaches 0, and given that you are not interrupted by an enemy hit at the last second, the character you revived will not lose a life. This way, managed correctly, all player characters can hold out to the very last life.

When playing online multiplayer co-op, you can see other people who are playing arcade mode online, and at what stage they are (indicated by a percentage number)
So if you do not necessarily want to start over Arcade Mode from level one, you can just keep checking the online sessions currently being played and join one close to where you last lost ;)
For example, 50% would be halfway through the game, 90% would drop you in at around the second to last stage (Episode 15) etc, etc

Andrew NDB 06-17-2022 08:56 PM

Does the difficulty fluctuate depending on how many players are playing? Like, is there the same number of Foot Soldiers for 1 player playing as there is if there are 6?

retr0pia75 06-17-2022 09:10 PM

just finished it earlier this night

THAT is what you call a video game. i don't know about anyone else, but turtles in time has definitely just been dethroned as the greatest tmnt game ever made in my eyes

Nickokapo 06-17-2022 09:15 PM

Yeah, elgarlic is right, the difficulty adjusts in real time relative to the number of players at any given time, so as to balance it, if there are 6 players, the game will throw more enemies at you
and make their health hit points higher so that it takes more hits to beat them.

But he also mentioned something very important difficulty-wise. If you are only down to 2 players for example, you and some other person, and the second player kind of sucks (does not revive you, loses health easily, is in need of reviving constantly), it will be considerably harder at the later stages. If you do not perform very well, and have a low leveled character, you can also hinder the other person.
But that is generally as hard a situation as it got for me, in 4-6 player scenarios, i did not find this problem.

Coola Yagami 06-18-2022 03:43 AM

Absolutely love this game so far. Played up to level 6 and only stopped cause it was like 2 in the morning and I don't want to see all the stages on my first go around. After I beat it, I'll go back and play with other players.

The game is made with a lot of passion and a lot of love for both the classic arcade games and the old cartoon.

Yeah, the old games were based on the cartoon but I feel it was based more on the general era. Like it was more based on the toyline when it came to the boss designs (Slash especially) and even mixed in the 90's movies and whatnot. But this one... this one is all about the old cartoon, referencing episodes, showing Vernon, Rat King playing his flute, the actual voice cast (that were available or still alive anyway) and the bosses having more a closer design to the cartoons (kinda like when you compare the newer NECA toon accurate figures to the original Playmates designs), stuff like Rocksteady being pudgey and whatnot.

My god I love this game. Long live beat em ups. I thought Streets of Rage 4 was awesome (and it still is) but man is this one ever so much ****ing fun. I admit I had doubts since they went with the 'purposely 8/16-bit look' when I saw the trailers, but man, I'm glad the action and gameplay feels more like the classic TMNT games and not like the Scott Pilgrim/River City Girls games.

Nickokapo 06-18-2022 04:06 AM

Everybody really pulled out all the stops from the artist's gourgeous pixelart, the composers and music talent, the incredible, 100% pure beat 'em up gameplay from the programmers, i mean...they went and coded 6 player co-op, online multiplatform crossplay, drop-in & out multiplayer netplay...3 extra characters, a well-designed, crafted and thought out, over 1 hour and a half long worth of raw playable content (the "campaign" if you will, to put it in some way--the meat and potatoes, cutting to the chase, i don't know how to explain n.n,) thoughout it's 16 stages.

Unbelievable.

Best game of 2022 i have played so far, the best beat 'em up game to have come out in recent years since "Streets of Rage 4", and generally speaking one of the best 'em up games i have ever played.
Certainly one of the best TMNT games ever, and that is a high bar that was set by "Turtles in Time", but this, this game is something amazing.
Even whether or not you like the Ninja Turtles, at the core of the matter is that if you enjoy the genre, then i have to strongly suggest that you should definitely try it. To give an example, and this is sheer, biased personal opinion from my subjective likes and whatnot, but, i enjoyed it even MORE than SoR4--and i LOVED SoR4, but i simply had more fun, the gameplay style is more up my alley.
But i don't have to sing to the tune of that alleycat blues since this is a turtles forum do i :tlol: the fact that it is a turtles game to boot, should actually be a huge selling point for us here, but just to make a point about the core game and core gameplay stripped of any nostalgia or franchise related perks.

For more than a year, i waited for this game. I had a trailer to go by, and already it was hyping me up. The anticipation was extremely high for me, but also, the expectation became high.
As soon as i found out at which exact time of day it would be released, i pulled an all-nighter and camped at the Steam store page, refreshing the page like a madman when the time of release was nearing, they actually posted it 2-3 minutes earlier than estimated (was like 10am argentina time, but got released like 9:57-9:58am) i got it right then and there.
The game sure delivered, all that i hoped for, and then some...i am very happy and satisfied.

"Tribute Games" really went above and beyond developing this game, it shows, and more importantly, it feels, i have so much respect for this studio now.

Andrew NDB 06-18-2022 04:11 AM

I bought it and installed it on the PS5 today. I did it while waiting for dinner to arrive and my daughter walked in on me playing in "Arcade Mode" just to get a sense of the game. I was in the middle of the first level and she was watching me play, so I invited her to take up the other controller and jump in. She declined, but kept watching me. She eventually just silently grabbed the controller and did so, impromptu. Which was cool.

We got through level 8. For the first 5 levels she was completely engaged, screaming at the screen when unforeseen stuff hit her and so on. By 6 and 7 she was noticeably weary. By 8 she was done. "It's just the same thing over and over again." Also, "there's no story." I noted that there is actually a story mode but that I didn't choose it because I just wanted to dip my toe into it. She didn't seem very convinced there was much of one but said she'd try such a mode with me later. This is also about how I'd expect it would go with any 14 year-old on the planet.

But it's cool. It's absolutely a love letter to those old TMNT Konami games. Part of me is wondering how these guys are even able to do this in exactly the ways they do this without Konami suing! And I don't mean that in a negative way. The wife was also very confused about it when she walked in. "This looks very good for being so old" along with telling me how she remembered playing or seeing the same game long ago. I told her it is a brand new game that just came out a couple of days ago, then she forgot I told her that and rattled off the same stuff a few minutes later.

Absolutely!!
I guess, just like what happened with castlevania and the "Bloodstained" series...sitting it out, and getting out-KONAMI'd by indie developers.
Since KONAMI is now warming the benches of game development and are no longer developing many actual proper games, let alone good ones, i am happy other studios are stepping up to that plate. Because gawd did i love konami with a passion...good OLD Konami, tho, just throwing that distinction out there.

But hey, you do you Konami--re-release emulations of all those classic games to high hell and back and bask in the easy money for all i care. Which, is very little at this point... (I do genuinely hope "Cowabunga Collection" does well, having said that, for reasons i will go into in its' own thread, but basically because it is the first time since years, decades even, that we are seeing these games get re-released, many for the first time ever. Last i can remember were the turtles arcade game and turtles in time included in the 2003 TMNT games from the PS2/Gamecube/etc. generation. Oh and an XBOX Live Arcade port of the first, '89 arcade game, that was delisted much too soon when they lost the license 4 years later, apparently.)
More recently again by Arcade1Up as standalone cabinets, but that was it...)

There is a very interesting behind the scenes video by DotEmu, of developers' "Tribute Games" process (i am assuming it was posted here already so i don't know if i should repost it, i will just leave it here in link form: www.youtube.com/watch?v=vVNuNSiKTj8 )
In it you can see how they explain they studied the classic konami TMNT games, from all standpoints, gameplay-wise, musically.
Now that the game is actually out and i got to play it, i can see without a doubt, they definitely did their homework and i love it:tlol:

neatoman 06-18-2022 06:10 AM

Even if I wasn't starved for cash right now, I would still wait until this game is off at least 50%. Partially because, even though I think it looks fun, I can't really stand what it represents and partially because I know eventually you can get almost any game at 50-90% off these days.

AquaParade 06-18-2022 10:20 AM

The dodge move elevates the game above the older titles more than anything, imo.

Fights, especially including bosses, are much more engaging when you get get in that rhythm of attack-backflip-attack. The agency helps make everything feel much more fair, and the challenge is still there.
It also just feels more badass to have that type of agency - you want to feel like a ninja turtle, not a rudimentary attack-bot.

I haven't enjoyed a beat-em-up this much in a long time and it's probably the most dynamic one I've played. Very happy with it. I would look forward to a sequel, where they can expand on these mechanics.
Maybe even add a "parry" or "block" move if it doesn't slow down the gameplay. Now that we have dodge, I want to see these mechanics fleshed out while maintaining the "crowd control" aspect of combat.
Hell, I wouldn't mind a little platforming either.
I think they could innovate further without losing the momentum of gameplay. Beat-em-up genre feels vital and full of potential to me.

RaphaelinSTL 06-18-2022 12:33 PM

Wow.

I've had a lot of time to sit with this game, and have put in nearly 10 hours so far since starting it immediately on Thursday morning and I'm having a blast with it. Like reviews and everyone here is saying, it nails what we all appreciated and adored about those classic Konami games while throwing in modern touches that make it unique and crank up the replay-ability.

Beat the story solo as Raphael first on easy just to get my feet wet (and also every TMNT game I start with has to be Raph!), made it through normal difficulty with Leo while having other people jump in my game and I can't wait to increase the progression of each character. I just want to keep going back to the game and playing it!

Dotemu, Tribute Games and Tee Lopes knocked it out of the park. I remember being a bit nervous with TG handling the gameplay function given how much I realllllly don't like how Scott Pilgrim plays ... but keeping this one in the oven a bit more was immensely rewarding as this has much more fun combat and controls even over Streets of Rage 4, and I adored that game.

Again, all this is super bittersweet as my brother died before his 30th birthday last year and we always played TMNT games together. A bit sad when people log in my games as Michelangelo knowing it's not my brother playing with me, but I'd like to think he would've really gotten a kick out of this one.

It easily tops Turtles in Time, and may be the best beat 'em up in the entire genre? It's that good.

Thank you Icebot and Cybercubed!

It looks like Tempestra and Zorax are getting treatment like Mutant Madness did. I never thought much of Commander Zorax and in addition to two games there is the recent Neca figure.

Wingnut appears to be based off his appearance in the episode Zack and the Alien Invaders opposed to TMNT Adventures, but he was also used in the Mutants in Manhattan a few years ago, while as an adversary taken design-wise from Archie.

A powered up Shredder is cliche for video games so its not a surprise to see Super Shredder. He looks like he did in the brief sequence from Secret of The Ooze and the toy. I was half expecting an original design or something reminiscent of the 2012 cartoon like Mutant Maness did.

It's great to see Chrome Dome as a proper boss since he only served as a tournament fighter character.

I understand with surprise of Slash's design. In all other video games he sported the black mask inspired by Archie with the fang like teeth instead we get the buck toothed metal band. I mean its great to have him included, but not the design most of us would choose even if one is trying to stay mostly in line with the 1987 cartoon.

Razhar and Tokka are with Tempestra? It appears they don't get proper boss treatment and from what I have read are illusions similar to the Shredder projections from The Arcade Game?

Krang using the statue of liberty as his android body seems out there...

One thing I am trying to figure out though, characters are leveled up is this similar in process of Mutant Madness which characters are collected and increased in level gaining abilities and higher stats gradually?

I’m glad they managed to get the 4 original turtles to do the voices and they sound amazingly still the same too. Pity they couldn’t get the original April and Splinter VA tho.

Btw my main is April, she’s the fastest with that lethal flying chain combo Chun-Li kick. She’s even better than the turtles lmao :tlol:Playing this on the hardest difficulty is so satisfying and rewarding.

So glad that they even got the original turtle voice talent cast :tlol: i personally loved Irma's voice, it is adorable, she sounds so cute!
I played with all characters long enough already that i think my favorite is also April. I think it's her speed, i love rampaging through the chaotic, foot-soldier filled levels, juggling and bouncing them off the wall doing 80+ combos at a near continuous rate x'D i get into like a trance state, haha.

Yeah, there is something satisfying about the gameplay, which is something that makes or break a "beat 'em up" game for me, i don't know what it is exactly, but some elements set apart what can be a dull, monotonous or repetitive beat 'em up game from a game that keeps you hooked with a sense of gratification. This game does that for me. Not many others do, at least not at that level ("Guardians: Denjin Makai II", "Cadillacs and Dinosaurs", off the top of my head.)

I'm fine with this. It's like in The Simpsons arcade game where only the Simpson family had their original voice actors.

Speaking of which, I wonder what a Tribute and DotEmu made Simpsons beat 'em up would be like...

Oh, how i would love for this to happen...like in the good old days of licensed beat 'em ups (Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, The Simpsons, X-Men, Bucky O'Hare, Cadillacs and Dinosaurs, Alien Versus Predator, Asterix, Captain America and The Avengers, The Punisher, Dungeons & Dragons: Shadow over Mystara, "Banpresto"'s Sailor Moon the arcade game, "SEGA"'s Spider-man: The Video Game, "Irem"'s 'Hook' arcade game, The Pirates of Dark Water SNES version, Mighty Morphin Power Rangers: The Movie...sigh, good times...)

If they put at least half the effort and care as they did on this, please, if you're listening Tribute Games/DotEmu, shut up and take my money:tlol: i'll buy them, i will buy all of them, i am exactly your target audience. Just keep making good games and mantain quality standards, and quality control, and i will be a happy camper.

BTW Thank you for adding me, OldManWinters, let's have fun! :tlol:

(I tried to get you "Capcom Beat 'em Up Bundle" so that we can play together, aswell as "Mastema: Out of Hell" & "Black Jewel" as a present. Steam won't let people from Argentina gift games to people in the United States ;w; booooooo!)

Would it be weird if they introduced a "versus" mode? Where 2-6 players smack each other around a limited but expanding/retracting area until only 1 is standing?
