Actually, maybe it's just me but I think owning up to something and then saying, don't worry, we'll do our best to straighten things out, seems to be more mature than acting like you had nothing to do with it...
The way it's been written would point to kids that lying is the way out of a difficult situation, which it isn't.
Eventually April (or ones parents for that matter) would discover the truth and be more disappointed and angry.
