They didn't displace anybody. It was always them, that was the whole point.
Donatello even stated during the episode that there had to be some reason why of all times and places, why then and there. Because it was always them who saved Splinter that day.
They didn't take over the role of anybody else, it was always them. That was made that very clear at the end. They learned what happened based on what they were told by Splinter in the past, then being they ended up there, to perserve their own present, everything had to happen again, and they couldn't interfere with what happened based on what they knew.
