Atleast Michael Bay's version of both Transformers and TMNT maintained some form of the original characters, even if they were hugely bastardized.

I think it depends on the company and director attached to the story. I mean the film adaptions of the Hunger Games and Harry Potter have been decent and rather enjoyable. Nolan's Bat Man Trilogy gave us a new incarnation of the batman franchise. And that upcoming film adaptation of Ghost in the Shell seems to show promise, though I'm not holding my breath on that one.
