I still think of this as a "new" game but it's already 3 years old. Also, yeah, completely dead. Definitely it did not do anywhere near as well MK11.

So inspired by the new movie I decided to play through the Story Mode in this. It starts out OK but man, it gets pretty wonky pretty quickly.

Basically, at the end of MK 11 the post-MK (2011) altered timeline Earth was destroyed and Liu Kang from it had to recreate it from memory, basically, while making the bad guys less bad. Simultaneously, somehow Shang Tsung did the same thing in an alternate timeline to this altered timeline. This Shang Tsung traveled to the new Earth that Liu Kang created in order to fool (later, betray) the bad guys there into helping him destroy that Earth and merge it into the Earth that HE created. And somehow as Shang Tsung gets closer to completing his plan... hybrid characters from the multiverse show up randomly? Like "Shao Zero" and stuff like that.

If they just cut all these cutscenes into a movie it'd be somewhat entertaining, but as the story of a Mortal Kombat game... why all this sci-fi time travel timey wimey stuff? It's enough to have all the mythologies of the Netherealm, Earth Realm, and Outworld and all the political intrigue there without compounding things with layers upon layers of stacked alternate realities/timelines.

Gameplay-wise, the Kameos thing is fine but doesn't really add much. And anytime you or your opponent dips down to like 15% health you can hit L2 and R2 and perform almost a mini-Fatality that removes like a third of the health of the other player. Basically, throwing a life line to players who are losing -- completely unnecessary and stupid.
