Hey erik, I'm kinda in the same boat as you. I've just now found out about and gotten into the Volume 4 comics. If you email the ninja turtles site, they'll just tell you that it's up in the air at this point. It's really a matter of whether or not Peter will have the time and desire to continue them. I've heard somewhere that it's supposed to continue in August this year, but I've also heard that it may not be coming back until next year. At this point, the only person I think knows when or if it will come back is Peter Laird himself.
Also, I think the last comic came out in June last year, so the 8 months would have been over about February. I love the series, but Peter should at the very least return long enough to change Raph and Donny back to normal and possibly wrap up all his story lines, though I'd much rather he continue indefinitely.
