My thought process is if he trained them to kill Saki, what was his planned for these trained ninjas after that was done? Just sit around and get fat? Why spend all that time training these ninja for one small task. Granted, it didn't turn out to be a small task, but still.

He succeeded in that. Cause if you really want to break it down, Leo just shoved a sword in him. They gave him the option to commit seppuku (sp?). Don threw the bo staff at Saki in self defense. I mean who really wants to be blown up by a termite grenade. Not me, but I could be in the minority
