One big difference is that 40 years ago, the internet (for the general public) and ubiquitous cameraphones didn't exist like they do now. So people now can actually communicate, record, document and share information to the world about any topic instantly, in which previously, they couldn't in such a collaborative and unified way without the financial, corporate, and publishing barriers of the past with television, books, radio, or newspapers/magazines. Plus, corroborating and validating the information was
far more exhausting in having to actually find physical copies of the controversial topic(s), as one would have to travel to go to libraries, bookstores, and film/video stores (if they would even bother to devote shelf space to it) unlike today with a simple internet search.
With faster connection speeds during the 2000s and the rise of social media that can give anyone a platform during the 2010s, it's why mainstream news, Big Tech corporations, and governments feel the need to stop "disinformation" on the internet because they can no longer control the narrative when the public has now become the reporters, verifiers, and critics of what's real news and fake news.
Of course it opens a deluge of enormous information with a vast range of accuracy, but it gives the public the tools to research and decipher what is actually accurate without the biased narrative context of big corporations and the government.
