Isn't politics manipulative by it's very nature, regardless of where it falls on the rightwing/leftwing scale? A politician doesn't have to be qualified, prove their ideas can work, follow through on their promises or even believe their own statements. They just have to convince enough people to vote for them to get into power. I don't think I have ever believed that successful politicians have especially strong convictions, at least not as strong as they want people to think.
