Remember that even Shredder wasn't always bad, but his jealousy and pride consumed his life down a path he could never come back from. His obsession to win Tang Shen ultimately cost both Splinter and Shredder the one they cared for most. And that could be done the same way with April, (minus the death of course )

True, but don't you think it would have been a better idea to allow viewers new to Don's character to actually SEE him as a noble man first? In the very first episode his crush on April is introduced. We know absolutely nothing about these turtles, but from the moment April hits the screen, Don's basic character is set in place for the rest of the series. We don't know about his ethics, his true personality, his thoughts, anything else that could be potentially skewed given his infatuation with April because we never got a chance to even see them.
If we learned who Don was first, and then later on down the line he developed this crush on her, and again his unhealthy obsession was given it's own story arc, we could really understand the change has come over his personality. Not to mention it would have given April's character a chance to breathe as well, to form as her own depth and personality without Don's lingering presence, and to give her a chance to interact with the OTHER turtles as well.
