Nobody save for comic book fans knew who Iron Man was and now, thanks to a creative team who gave a damn and respected the source material, a studio willing to put the effort and money behind the project, and a fantastic cast of actors, Iron Man is a household name.
And that was BEFORE all the Avengers hype. They managed to make Iron Man HUGE based on nothing but great trailers and fantastic word of mouth.
GotG has an equal if not BETTER chance than Iron Man did. Now because Marvel Studios is a proven brand with quality product and a lot, A LOT, of good faith and hype behind it.
I'm not really a betting man, but gun to my head? I think it's going to do great. Maybe not Avengers numbers but then it really doesn't need to do those types of numbers.

I don't think Iron Man was as obscure a character as you're trying to make him out to be. I knew who Iron Man was at the time, and I wasn't into comics at all at the time. My experience with Iron Man was through his cartoon in the mid-90s. It's a far different situation with Gaurdians of the Galaxy in terms of name recognition at the time the came out. If Iron Man was a B-list character at the time, GotG are barely D-list characters. This film, Ant-Man, Dr. Strange/Black Panther wouldn't be possible without the brand recognition Marvel Studies has built up with it's Cinematic Universe.
