I'll take poignancy over action in the TMNT books any day, though an important balance between the two is what makes the series so damn good.
While I love what idw is doing with the ongoing material, I also love and to a point, prefer the shorter archs and oneshots that mirage did. Vietch's The river and the zulli's run were amazing 4 issue archs. Son's of the silent age was one of my most favorite single comic issues of all time. I also loved issue #37 twilight of the ring amongst other small runs within volume one. Each style (one long ongoing series and smaller clusters of individual stories) has its perks. Personally, I enjoy reading 2-4 smaller well written archs/self contained stories throughout the year instead of just one single story. both are great, but I would rather have 2-4 great stories to love instead of just one. Plus it's easier for anyone who misses a book or two to just hop back in without getting discombobulated.
