Donnie and Leo have unaddressed tension that has existed since the end of season 2. So far this tension only appears when Donnie feels that he's being pushed. This season Don easily overpowered by an opponent or one of the first to be taken out of a battle as well.

So possible Nick version of issue #44.

This recent episode, Donnie was sinking to Raph's level which also could be caused by frustrations that haven't been brought to the surface yet.

Or maybe since the story has hinted that April will be going dark...and in city of war there was that point where Donnie wanted to step in when Shinigami and April were going at it. And he is able to calm her down when she is still under the crystals influence. Perhaps he believes he can reach her and instead is psychically incapacitated.
i also think that someone else will end up dying but to me, it seems more likely on it being leo with how hes been going off solo and his almost death in earths last stand
