For me, with the Turtles movies, it's a little bit like... imagine if every day on the walk to work the same person from the same building is trying to shoot at you from their window. Every day. You know it's coming, every day at the same time, as soon as you walk past that certain building (and for the sake of argument, let's assume there's no other suitable route to work). Now, sooner or later, you're going to put on a flak jacket, right?

Jacket's working great. Don't care.

Its a sad day because a lot of people really thought this movie would be "the one" that gets recognized on the level of the current Batman, Spiderman and X-men movies.

I guess it was nothing but a pipe dream.

For every Dark Knight there's a Green Lantern, good sir.

The GL movie certainly wasn't poetry -- and no, I didn't really like it -- but I don't think it deserved half of the flak it's gotten in most circles. At a certain point it seemed to become hip to hate on it, and then there sort of emerged this mob mentality about it.

I'll admit, I don't hate it, but of the recent superhero movies, and especially those released by DC it's one of the weaker of the bunch.

EDIT: Maybe I should replace GL with Jonah Hex.

Indeed, or to use a 1990 example, for every 1st Turtle movie, there is a Dick Tracy. And I liked the Dick Tracy film, which didn't click with audiences for whatever reason.

And to CyberCubed's most recent post: until the past decade, nobody in the industry thought mainstream comic book movies were profitable or doable with few exceptions -- now everyone's doing it. The first Turtle movie was unique, because it didn't involve Superman or Batman, which were at the time, the most viable comic book franchises to become mainstream movies. It's a slow and ongoing process, and there may never be "the one perfect Turtle movie."

At least, the Turtles had four movies before we get the current Hollywood revamp mode. Chances are, they'll revamp the 2013 movie in a few years or in a decade (like Sony ultimately did to Spider-Man), so this whole thing may completely be moot. But very instructive, depending on one's passion about the subject.

And as always, Andrew has the most unique metaphors or similes. Way to go with Five O'Clock Charlie, or that is what comes to mind. (If anyone is a M*A*S*H nerd, you'll know I mean.)

I think you meant to say for every Dark Knight there are TEN Green Lanterns (or whatever bad comic book movie you want to insert here). It certainly takes a long time for a decent comic book movie to come out, but then again, I tend to be harder on them than most.

But if you think about it, Batman was around for about 70 years before getting a movie like The Dark Knight. Here's hoping it doesn't take the TMNT that long!

That's a hell of a way to look at it. I've never looked at it that way, but it's hard to argue the point... hah.

Take him off the pedestal.
The Ninja Tribunal season was my favorite season of the 4Kids toon.

I don't disagree, as Dark Knight is incredibly impressive (and, frankly, depressing). And yet, Batman Returns has aged rather well, and far more nuanced than Burton's first effort. It captures the then-gradual bleakness of the franchise pretty well, and avoided and established some tropes along the way. At least, until the penguins attacked -- that should have been avoided entirely. Forever had its problems, but it was nice to see Bruce Wayne in the spotlight for a change. (And I don't subscribe to the whole "Batman is Bruce's true persona" mindset, even though, there is convincing counter-evidence.) And we will never speak of "Batman & Robin."

The Turtles had the opposite problem: a decent start and got progressively odder and more absurd in later films. Meanwhile, after years of without comic book films, now we have a glut of them -- what to do?

As I said on the FB group:

The more I read, the more I hear about the new 2013 movie the more I'm beginning to think it's all a way to drum up false negative publicity.

There's no such thing as bad press. All it took was one sentence in a 15 second clip, and there are multiple multi-page threads on the Technodrome, Robbie Rist has come out against it bringing it to the attention of TMZ....it's like a perfect storm.

They've done nothing but let the Internet be the Internet and now almost everybody is talking about the Ninja Turtles. Even those damned "causals" people baulk at all the flippin' time.

Yeah I'm really hoping this alien's talk doesn't mean such a drastic change in origins but I'm not sure why anyone would expect a truly great comic book based movie from Hollywood today even with a few masterpieces having come along in recent years. If TMNT 1 remains the best TMNT movie, I'm okay with that. Just like I'm okay if Nick's TMNT is not as enjoyable to me as 4Kids TMNT or even the 80s show. But I wouldn't want the franchise to die because Viacom dropped the ball with it.

See, that video recording of Bay talking at the event is taken from a different angle to the one that was first revealed. There's obviously a recording out there of the whole panel. We've got to find it.

Now we've invoked Godwin's Law, or close enough. Awesome. And really funny, as always.

And the perfect irony to the Dreamland story arc, per the Turtles' word games with Hitler and his suicide, etc.
