The movie has held up very well in terms of the overall plot, animation, humor and character meetings. I loved how it celebrated both the 25th anniversary and acted as a series finale for the 4kids series at the same time.

Yea they gave plenty of respect to all the comics that were published up to that point, yet the original cartoon interpretation was treated like a freaking joke!

They handled the characters decently enough. They got Shredder/Krang/Bebop/Rocksteady perfectly, as well as Splinter and April. With the exception of Leo not being serious, Raph and Don were handled very well, and to a lesser extent Mike was the same.

Okay I'll grant they had their moments but certain incidents were just painful, especially that part near the end where 4Kids Raph saved OT Mike, Leo and Raph and they all start crying like babies! Since when are the OT Ninja Turtles that wimpy?!

I still think it best to consider the 2nd team of TMNT in Turtles Forever to be the Playmates Turtles, not the Fred Wolf Turtles. They never called the Turtle Van a 'party wagon' in the show. NEVER.

I watched this again recently, but my first viewing of was about a year or so ago.
I didn't know it existed, and after reading about it, I just had to watch it. I was seriously impressed. I thought the creative team had done a great job of writing a script that actively blended the two shows characters, styles, humor, etal whilst pulling off a really entertaining movie. So, whilst enjoying this a whole lot (I think I even ordered a pizza) I genuinely got excited when they ended up in B/W land, and met the original Turtles. They pulled out all the stops on this to give something to everyone. The close, with the creation of the first page and the last line of dalogue were priceless. For me, it's a great movie, and I've shown it in school and I haven't had anyone not like it, and for most of my kids, it's the first time they have ever seen the OT guys! I will close by saying, Cool Movie. |

I was very excited for this movie and had laughed so much at the previews like "we save April at least once a day." But after I watched the movie I just didn't like their interpretation of the turtles. And upon second watching I realized they weren't just treated bad it felt outright mean spirited and Laird's way of pissing the OT he hated so much.
At first most of the opinions were positive and people were just hyped as hell of the new movie and it was only a few of us who complained but as time has gone by more fans have noticed just what a ****** treatment the OT got. The movie has actually grown on me but many of the scenes just take me out, those are not the OT turtles, they are an outright parody of themselves and have more in common with 2k3 mikey than anything from the OT, not even in their silliest days did they act like anywhere near that. Only Beebop/Rocksteady were used correctly. It was supposed to be a meet up of the two shows, not a "look how silly this show was" when it wasn't even like that. Just because the OT get a few "hurrahs" during the movie doesn't make up for the fact of how they were treated. "Oh sorry for treating you like crap, here have a cookie and let's make up now". Quote:
Also to me it wouldn't be the playmates turtles because as seen in the bios and box art of the toys those turtles were totally more bad-ass than the oT turtles, so it's clearly a different universe from playmates Last edited by sdp; 04-04-2013 at 09:23 PM. |

They got the villains perfectly. Shredder and Krang were exactly how they were in the OT. Even in Season 7 Shredder literally got beaten by the turtles throwing something at him or jumping on top of him.
I also fail to see how Raphael was out of character, when he acted exactly like his OT counterpart. So did Donatello. Mikey didn't get to do that much, but his love of pizza was kept. And Leo was just...Leo. |

Turtles Forever for me is enjoyable, and I like to watch it from time to time, but it could have been so much better if they had simply dialed back how much they made fun of the OT turtles, it really takes you out of the movie, at least it did me. Sure the OT is goofy at times, but never were they reduced to anywhere close the brainless drooling morons that they were portrayed as in Turtles Forever. They joked but they didn't laugh off the threat of villains in the OT. Donnie was a competent engineer in the OT, in TF he was an idiot who banged on everything with a hammer. And sure in the OT Orange occasionally did the belch noise thing when he talked but never to the extent that they showed in TF. They had him bleching 5 times everytime he talked. They over exaggerated the OT quirks big time. This could have been a chance to take the Turtles from the first season of the FW series and have them meet up with the 4Kids version and we would've had the greatest 100 minutes of Turtle action ever to be on tv or in a movie. Instead they derailed that chance just so they could be little and degrade a series that quite frankly got most of us interested in the Turtle franchise in the first place.
Do I still enjoy it, Yeah, but damn did they drop the ball and blow a huge opportunity just so they could take some cheap shots at the OT.

Just curious how often do some of you actually watch the original toon? I watch it once every year in a complete 193 episode run.
The turtles do laugh at their enemies and in danger. When the turtles met the Swatter for the first time they burst out laughing. When they heard a rhino and warthog were stolen from the zoo in episode 2 from April, they burst into laughter. Shredder and Krang were goofballs. Shredder was always beaten by one or two attacks, mainly the turtles throwing something at him. |

I watch it weekly, I have all of the seasons, and watch 2-3 hour chunks while I draw at night, 2-3 nights a week. Never in the OT have I see the Turtles reach a level of silliness that they hit & maintained the entire time in Turtles Forever. Were some episodes more silly & filled slapstick humor than others? Absolutely! But never to the overdone extent that it was in Turtles Forever.

I have just ordered the UK edit from Amazon UK.
I don't get all the negative comments about the OT guys though. There was a great point made above, about how they were always laughing, and yeah they goof around a lot (3 musketeers type stuff), and one I watched last night when they were attacking their fridge to defrost it.. Not thinking to just unplug it. Of course, its plugged back in and the lair becomes an ice rink. It was that kind if show. I really thought the Forever movie captured everything pretty well, and is my favorite of all the Turtles movies, in that I can watch and enjoy it quite frequently. |

Lately I've been watching various foreign dubs of the OT just to get a feel of the acting presented even if I don't understand most of those other languages. But I feel that the writers needed to make the OT characters that much sillier/goofier just so that the contrast between them and the 4kids was more dramatic to make it entertaining. Mirage had a smaller part, but it was a nice way to show the true spirit of the original comics since 4kids were basically polished to feel more "realistic" as opposed to being overly crude. But Nick is giving new life on the concept, even if in a smaller scale (one episode and supposedly just the OT Turtles) but with the actual OT voices. However the Nick Turtles are less serious than 4kids meaning that the differences in personalities will be smaller, so generating drama will be more of a challenge.

So when the 80's TMNT meet the 2012 TMNT and if they get portrayed the RIGHT way.... what excuse will the 2K3 crowd have for Turtles Forever....

I agree with Allio. Probably the biggest reason the "comedic" FW Turtles come off as (even bigger) caricatures of the Turtles is because they were written by the 4kids writing staff....and they couldn't write humor like the FW team could. The 4th wall breaking was there, but otherwise the "humor" wasn't even close to what made the FW series enjoyable.
Oh, and Cybercubed, opinions change. I'm sure there are people who watched TF and loved it when it was new, but in retrospect, once the newness wore off, can see the cracks. Gobo may be on to something, too. Not only do they call the Turtle Van the "Party Wagon", but they call the Mutagen "Ooze"...which I'm sure the FW series never did. And exactly how often did the Turtles fight Shredder over the "Ooze"?

Didn't the 4kids turtles compliment the Turtle Van and Blimp after they got used to them? I remember them saying they weren't half bad and they were useful.
