I kind of feel you on this. It's not the best issue ever, but I enjoyed it for what it was. Art definitely felt rushed often, but considering how busy Kevin is and how long this book was, I don't blame him, it's just unfortunate.

It actually reminded me a lot of the Unmentionables, only it wasn't quite as much of a faux-caper this time around. But the goofy humor was there as well as, unfortunately, the total lack of focus around the turtles. Not enough turtles was definitely my biggest disappointment, but there were some really cool moments with the Shredder, and there were some moments that made me chuckle out loud, like Raph's constant harping on Casey and his bat.

Overall, it was a solid blast from the past, just unfortunately, not the best part of the past. I know Eastman & Laird have their fair share of goofiness, but I'm hoping to see a more serious Eastman tale sometime in the near future!

I just picked this up today and have to say it was amazing to read an issue both drawn and written by Kevin. I really enjoyed it and thought it was well done. Felt like an old Mirage issue. Found it was cool that it was b&w too. It would have been fun to see Kevin's work colored though other then the cover, but the b&w really gave it that classic TMNT feel.

I plan on doing a full write up over at my blog in bit. Should be up by the end of the day.

I don't either, I don't ever plan on reselling any of the great art I've got, but like you said, you could get a hell of a lot better art piece for $200 than for $100 to the artist on a substrate that costs $100.

Here's my review of TMNT Annual 2012 at TMNT Entity.

I think having Tom Waltz on the script really helped. Eastman LOVES "fly by the seat of your pants" writing, but it doesn't always turn out so hot (Bodycount, Melting Pot). Having someone there to help keep the story focused and on track, but without ditching all the awesome Eastman-isms, really made a difference.

Nice to finally know the deal behind the Savate Ninja after almost a year, even if they're organization is revealed to be an idiotic, comical thing. Still, I can't say it disappoints any real build up, as they were hardly heard from since TMNT #6 and there weren't really any high expectations going for them.

I guess it takes place shortly before TMNT #15, or at least, that's what made sense to me. Either way, it was a nice standalone tale.

I REALLY liked Splinter punishing Casey alongside Raph at the end. It helped drive the point home that Casey's now a member of the Turtle family (as issue #14 stated), and that includes both the perks and the punishments.

Lots of great stuff. Thanks for the early Christmas gift, IDW!

To be perfectly honest, I completely agree.

I really really really hate to say it but I agree. So much of it just felt unnecessary, and it hardly had any mainstay TMNT characters in it. It was great in tone, very much so a throwback to the Mirage days, but a wasted opportunity, I think. Give us another one with more actual TMNT content, rather than some random criminals and Irish dudes.

Also turning the Savate into a joke about how they're French pretty much takes any merit they could have possibly had.
Because now I'll always remember them as stupid French stereotypes.

I agree with it being like the Unmentionables; it was a fairly enjoyable story for me. Not perfect, but I liked following the various characters through a series of chance events that nearly lead to a multi-gang fight to the death. Obviously, Kevin was going to be a bit rushed due to the size of this project (the old TMNT days were slower with releases). But even still, I was glad to see him back on writing and art.

I thought this was easily the best issue of the IDW run so far, beating out the Leo issue of the micro-series. Love Eastman's art, and I missed the sprawling grittiness of TMNT that we haven't really seen for a long time.

What 'sprawling grittiness' did this issue have that the rest of the series lacked in your eyes?

Maybe this would have been a good time for Kevin to reunite with Peter Laird for this project. Or would that have been too much a bother?

Overall it wasn't bad at first I wasn't really digging it because of the introduction of all the new characters and how little the turtles were in it at first. The nods to Frank Miller and Richard Corben among other things were neat.

It definitely needed more turtles but had good parts as well as a vibe of The Unmentionables as others have stated. It was quite the project for Kevin to do after not really doing a full issue since the late 80's. Its also cool he did it on duo toned paper hopefully he will also do a more turtle based book at some point but I think this is the type of story Kevin enjoys telling. I'd like to see him do another story even if its a regular issue length more turtle centric but by the end of the book I was pretty happy with the read.

I don't know all too much about Jetpack comics. Does anyone know if there is a chance their variants on this annual will ever come down in price? I'm referring to all 4: the 2 overpriced AND the 2 super-overpriced variants. I'm trying to be a completist with this series, but I can think of plenty of other things I would rather spend $280 on at the moment!

From what I've heard to date, Jetpack is planning on using the majority of the blanks for a Free Comic Book Day promotion with Kevin Eastman in May. That's all the details I have at the moment.

So most of them will only be available in person at events on the east coast? Hmmm... then again, if I can find anyone who is able to attend...

Hard to know at this point exactly how these will be distributed. I'm a bit confused because they are available now at $100 each but are planned to be used for FCBD promotion with Kevin. What if they sell out prior to May?
