As an adult accepting a series that is like the old toon might be painful. Had I been 6 when BTTS was on like I was with the old toon when I turned 20 I might have had love for it because of how awesome it would have been to me as a kid. However that wasn't the case and BTTS was just horrid and basically unwatchable.
And any ways if they want to focus on the 80's toon then make it normal animation not this CGI garbage. Last edited by Spitfire; 10-22-2009 at 11:45 PM. |

Wow this is actually good news. I loved the old toon (still missing some dvd sets). Its nice to know Nick is making a shred of effort (no pun intended) to appeal to the older fans, still like noted before, it comes down to the writing.
Im still not that happy about the whole thing because for the longest time now, Nick has trend of canceling almost every new show that doesnt catch on the second it airs. I know TMNT has a bigger following than most of thier current stuff so it should have an a bit of an advantage, or maybe not, Nick doesnt really seem to care about thier own creations unless its an overnight sensation and classics from the 90's still dont have DVD releases. On a side note, whats with all the hate for the old toon? Ive never read the comics but the old toon was great. Sure its goofy but seeing it again in my 20s, its not as bad as some are saying. Besides the villian/monster of the week it had fun fight scenes and cool weapons.

Toons back then, IMO, took a lot more work and dedication. I think that shows in your final work. |

http://ninjaturtles.com/html/comic.htm Scroll to the bottom of the page. There you'll find free scans of the first seventeen issues of "Turtles Prime". It's not going to cost you anything but time, and if you still don't get a hint of what us Old Schoolers are about, then all you've wasted was time. I have a healthy dose of respect for the old 'toon, I do. It's what got me into this whole thing from the get go. But...looking back? With the exception of a few episodes, all I get from the old cartoon is the nostalgia value. It's possible that I'm just too old for them now, hell...I can't watch Roadrunner cartoons now without getting massive amounts of contact embarrassment for the coyote, and I used to love watching him go splat as a kid. 'Course, as a kid I actually got to see him hit the canyon floor, instead of just hear it on a completely black screen, but I digress. In my opinion the original cartoon's flaws far outweigh that nostalgia value. So to me, hearing that Nick wants to go that route...well it damn well disappoints me. Especially when I get the impression that the creators wouldn't have allowed such a thing to get created in the first place, if they'd known what they were doing at the time. The sale to Nick says to me that Laird just got tired of trying to fight the current, and took himself out of the river entirely. Which...now all I can think of is that there's some unmutated Peter Laird somewhere out there, while a six foot tall Bloodsucker is parading around in his stead. Sadly that's not likely to be a reference you'll catch, as those issues of Vol 1 hadn't been scanned in time. But trust me, "The River" is one of the better B&W story arcs.

WHAT flaws? Don't even bother listing them, because it doesnt matter, you've fallen right into the usual samey pattern a lot of elitists fall into. Again, it's just some boring fad and a show of ignorant testerone to dislike something you enjoyed as a kid. "Nostalgia" is the most overbearing and cliched term ever devised to excuse enjoying something that would otherwise have no problem showing it to their kids I could argue most of the comics don't f*cking hold up either, especially in contrast to ARCHIE....but that would be ignorant of me considering the non-Laird and Eastman material is of fine quality. I'm OBJECTIVE enough to know that..but someone, somewhere, IS thinking without rose-tinted glasses on some of those early issues...not that I'd respect his or her opinion either, because it's likewise ignorant, but the tables being turned on things you enjoy more now may wake you up one day to how others view the thrashing of the original series. If you didnt like the original series from the beggining, I'd understand THAT, but to say it doesnt hold up is bulls*it, especially if you enjoyed it a long time ago. You'd still enjoy it, it's simply the state of the bitch-ass snobbery perpetuated in the animation industry has programmed you into thinking things have a "sell by date"

Read through the first two color trades last night, and no...they're really not the best written things ever produced by man. But I like them. And part of the reason why I like them is because they take me back. Which...if you can find a better synonym for "nostalgia" to express that feeling...by all means feel free to grind it into the ground. And the Archie stuff? Hell's yeah that's great stuff. Mitchrony is still to this day one of my favorite comic artists of all time. I for one am really disappointed that the Archie series won't get its very well deserved resolution. And yeah, I felt the same way when the DreamWeave comics went under as well. You seem to be suffering under the delusion that elitism is a bad thing, which...is kind of amusing to me,...because I thought the anti-intellectual thing was a US-centric phenomenon. Also...your own latent sexism is showing. I'm not a male.

There was so much "in the internet"/Tron stuff going on in Volume 4 that it was really very distracting. I mean, if Laird doesn't do his 18 issues a year how will we ever know if they actually get around to collecting all of Splinter's databits? Oh wait, there wasn't ever any of that in the Mirage series. My bad.

I just realized something awesome about them focusing on the OT style... 2012 is the 25th anniversary of the OT!

Oh, you mean be politically-correct bores ? Please stay the hell away from the television industry pal. ...I bet you were just tickled pink with all the stuff the first four seasons of the current series got away with. Decaptiation, intended murder, Baxter falling to peices. Can it with the hypocrisy, you're making me laugh too hard By who's definition? Yours? Who are you again? Quote:

I think it's obvious why Nick wants to focus on the 80's toon:
That was when the Turtles were in there prime and at the most marketable. Nick obviously wants to make a repeat of that success and hopefully things will be different this time(ie more action, Mikey gets to keep his nunchucks, Baxter is black, etc) And what do you mean sexist undertones? If by racist you're referring to Baxter, I'd agree, but sexist? Where? |

I like how you add in Baxter being black at the end of things like more action and Mikey having nunchuks. Like it ACTUALLY F*CKING MATTERS!
You God damn people. |

In the OT Splinter was Hamato Yoshi which is really...uncool in a very fundamental way. During WWII, there was a whole lot of US propaganda against Japan that dehumanized the Japanese people by depicting them as rodents. I know as a white kid in the 80s I had no idea about this connection, and hell...it wasn't until a few years ago that I'd even heard tale of the depictions. And on a Smallville board of all things. My hope is that the new Nicktoon will follow the Mirage Books, Movies, and 2k3 series and keep Splinter as Yoshi's pet. As for the sexism? April. Just...April. April in her objectified, cleavage bearing, bright yellow jumpsuit. Turtles Forever got that bit right, you really can set your watch by how many times April needs rescuing. I mean, the Mirage books are guilty of it too, and while one could argue that a good chunk of her damsel in distress'ness was really thumbing a nose at Frank Miller, it's still there. Irma? The man-hungry dowdy friend of the hot-chick? That's a trope the media could do without another example of. I'm not even going to try to go near the Cultural Appropriation topic, because I am by no means well versed in the trope to discuss it at length, but there's a whole lot of that too. If you're ever bored, check out TV Tropes: http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.ph...njaTurtles2003 I'll stop here, as I can already hear the swords of detractors shaking, telling me I'm taking this "too seriously". That it's "just a kids show", and that I should "just lighten up." To them I say, chances are good that you didn't grow up as a girl liking the turtles and constantly being told that they're for boys. Hell, I had a five year old tell me that last month at a Con. My response: My mother taught me that toys are made for people to play with, whether or not they're boys or girls.

That show was not made during WWII, I think you know that. They simply did it to make that story get over with quicker, and make more sense of Splinters skills and knowledge. |

What's with all the hostility in here? Relax, folks. Chill.
Nostalgia aside I'm not the biggest fan of the '80s cartoon and a return to that style is not my preferred direction for the franchise to take, but the recent more serious efforts haven't been too great either, so as far I'm concerned the property has nowhere to go but up.

People of color is common term used when discussing ethnic disparities. You should get out into the internet more. Possibly Google "The Invisible Knapsack" while you're out there. And I've no doubt that the Splinter shift was done to speed the story along, just as I've no doubt that a room full of white guys made that decision. A room full of white guys whose parents were alive when there were Internment Camps in the US. Either way? It's a racist change and one that shouldn't be duplicated in the Nicktoon.
