Actually, it's because the X-Men were launched before any studio had any clue whether or not the general public would go see a comic book movie that was too "comic booky" in appearance. Marvel Studios pretty much exploded that as a myth with more colorful true-to-books appearances, though. You can even see how X-Men First Class moved towards the classic look bringing yellow into the costumes, Wolverine's classic mask and a brown/yellow influence was in the original ending of The Wolverine, and the X-Men are leaning more towards a bit of color with Days of Future Past while still keeping the general thematic tone of the movies already established (though with the timeline getting altered, Apocalypse could go any direction).

This one's true, though they updated his look in the comics prior to him appearing in Thor.

(Edit, there's a smaller pic of Cap so it's not ENORMOUS)

Yep, that's what I was referring to. His film look was from The Ultimates which came out after Ultimate Spider-Man and Ultimate X-Men. Essentially the Avengers in the Ultimate universe (because Bendis noted "they were called the Avengers, but weren't really formed to avenge anything").

Classic 616 Hawkeye has kept the purple look, but Ultimate Hawkeye was the basis for the movie version.

X-Men: First Class used color because it was safe to. X-Men was already a super successful franchise.

And I sort of forgot Cap wore that in The Avengers (I really didn't like that movie), but it doesn't look like he'll be wearing it in Winter Soldier. Oh well.

And I don't think that Wolverine alternate ending was ever scheduled to be in the movie. Just something they did for fun or for the special features. I dunno.

It's just speculation on my part, but I'm convinced First Class felt safe to work the color in because Marvel was having success with full blown comic bookyness with Iron Man and they had Thor underway with the same vibe and colorful costumes. Don't forget that while Marvel Studios isn't involved, Marvel does still have some consultation with Fox and Sony on their IPs.

The dark suit in Winter Soldier is intentional. It's thematic to the mood and what's going on in the film, as well as ties in to Rogers' problems with what he's doing. By end of the film or Avengers 2, it'll be stars and stripes.

Winter Soldier is based off his costume from Steve Rogers: Agent of Shield.

As for Wolverine...
It was actually the original ending. They weren't sure what costume he'd wear in Days of Future Past, so they decided not to use it. But if you watch the theatrical release, when he's talking to Mariko at the end, a guy walks over to Yumiko and hands her the box with the costume by the plane. Then inside the plane.....no box. It was a cool way to work it in if it was a gift from Mariko since the design of the mask did have a bit of the old samurai demon mask feel to it.

I guess you know more about comic books than I do. Too bad that Wolverine scene had to be cut. Even if he wasn't going to end up wearing it, it would have been a fun easter egg.

I would have to agree X-men are certainly branching out and kep more comicbook esque looks because the comic book trend to stick with the source.

Also love his bad ass black suit think its very modern and even though hes a super hero and black suit for covert missions would make since.

I really wish they would have kept that in the movie as well such a good nod to the Comic, but i do like his look in the new xmen lol kinda kick ass and comic-Y while not such extreme colors.

They're not exactly running around in spandex halloween costume tights.

Yeah right?

I'm betting they do a big chunk of business opening week just for the "WTF Factor", people curious to see what it's all about. Then if it's actually a good movie, Bam, tons of repeat business. I'm expecting them to do well.

I may or may not go see GotG. I kind of doubt it, I didn't get to see Wolverine, Thor 2 or Iron Man 3 in theaters so I doubt I'll bother with GotG, but I bet a lot of people will. More than TMNT? We'll see which one can go the distance. Late summer season, it'll be entirely based on which is the stronger-quality film. Lots of people will see TMNT out of brand loyalty, but if it's a weak movie overall, or alienates too many of the purists, it will have a big drop-off after its first week.

Movies like TMNT.

Movies like this get promo material sometimes a year to years in advance. That's usual a teaser poster or character teaser images. TMNT hasn't gotten that.

A year to about 6 months from release it gets a teaser trailer. TMNT hasn't gotten that.

Any of it. It's 5 months before release and we only just now know what the stars of the freaking movie look like because of an accidental leak of a children's halloween costume, slightly blurry leaked shots of some production maquettes, a leaked shot of a merchandise promo image and some action figures.

THAT'S UNUSUAL.

my gf think its a good thing they hadn't shown it. they're just waiting for the right moment to jazz everyone up with excitment for the new tmnt movie.
she and i are very optimistic about the whole thing.

People are currently REALLY excited about the Godzilla movie.

People were REALLY excited about the Godzilla movie back in July during SDCC with the Godzilla movie's huge Godzilla exhibit/interactive amusement park style ride.

10 months before release.

Soooooooooooooooo...yeah.

Waiting until the two-minute warning before they jump out and yell, "SURPRISE! Our movie isn't the drizzling sh*ts!" isn't a smart strategy regardless, my dude.

the difference between this film and avatar is that there are alot of people who expect it to be an utter disaster. they're not helping to change that opinion by

1.) not releasing anything official to persuade fans they might actually know what their doing.
and
2.) rushing to pull leaks from the net like they're ashamed of what they created.
everyday they lose an opportunity to try and win back some of their audience.
