They should get Joss Whedon to direct one. He loves killing off beloved characters too. Well, except maybe AoU's Quicksilver.

Yeah, I get the feeling Luke will die at the end of Episode 9.

I'm guessing Leia will be the only one from the original cast to survive this new trilogy.

Leia will survive because she's not actively going out into battle, unless the First Order finds her base and is able to destroy it with her inside.

Not that I'm wishing Leia's death, but...as she's Force Sensitive, and actually builds a saber of her own in the now defunct EU, I do wonder what affect that would have on Kylo Ren...

Either Luke dies in Episode 8 and becomes a Force Ghost in Episode 9...or he dies in Episode 9 itself.

Its so sad all the heroes die. Star Wars was supposed to be uplifting for kids, now its turned into Hamlet and King Lear.

Subsequent google searches of my own have provided third hand quotes of Lucas saying the movies were meant for children, but I've yet to find anywhere that he mentions they were to uplift them in any way.

Or maybe the google-fu is not strong with this one...

Here, I'll help.
Google search terms: star wars made for kids children
6th link: http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-2631396/Anxious-Revealed-Why-George-Lucas-convinced-Star-Wars-dream-flop.html

Quote:
The actor Richard Dreyfuss reveals Lucas’s fears in a four-part BBC 2 series that charts the history of science fiction in popular culture.
Dreyfuss, who was filming Steven Spielberg’s Close Encounters Of The Third Kind at the same time, said: ‘George was seeing the film we were shooting, and in many ways he had wanted that to be Star Wars.’
Dreyfuss also recalls a meeting with a ‘very glum’ Lucas in a restaurant just as work on Star Wars was winding down.
‘George said, “I made a kids’ film,” and he had wanted to make an adult film. And we all commiserated with the billionaire-to-be.’

Here is this one. This was from a decade ago about the prequels, but it still stands:

http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/entertainment/394542.stm

Quote:
"The movies are for children but they don't want to admit that. In the first film they absolutely hated R2 and C3-PO. In the second film they didn't like Yoda and in the third one they hated the Ewoks... and now Jar Jar is getting accused of the same thing."
And Lucas is right. The hate Jar Jar got was mainly from disgruntled adults who didn't want to admit Star Wars was a kids film. They are similar to the people who hated the Ewoks or complained about C-3P0.

Star Wars is for kids and young teens.

Here's the thing: Lucas wanted a movie for kids with Episode I. The Ewoks were made for kids, too. That's about it. If you're going to legit call Revenge of the Sith, hell even AoT, a kids' movie, then oh my.

But if Luke dies, I think he'll have a similar send-off as Yoda did. He'll make peace with everything, pass the torch onto Rey, and then become one with the Force and achieve true power. They already murdered Solo, so I don't really see them murdering another one of the original cast members. But I think Leia stands the best chance of surviving.

Except for a couple of things:
1) You didn't say it was meant for children, you said it was meant to uplift them. That's entirely different.

2) The link and quote I provided, right around the time I did your research for you, says otherwise. That Lucas did not intend to make a movie for children.

And if he did...if that was indeed his sole function, which I doubt again given the quote I provided, he's one messed up dude. The whole of the prequels is a text book tragedy. The breakdown of a once honorable man. Who then has his limbs severed and is left to die at the mouth of a volcano.

Real uplifting there, Mr Lucas.

I do love how Lucas blames the Jar Jar hate on the "media's fascination with the internet". That just screams: Old man yells at clouds. And as if Jar Jar were the only racially problematic thing in those movies.

Face it, Cubed. You got nothing.

Are you seriously saying you never knew Star Wars was marketing toward kids? The sheer mass of toys, cartoons, comics, the movies being watched by people during their childhood, etc.

Star Wars is much like DC/Marvel superheroes, TMNT, etc. Its aimed at kids and young adults to hook them when they're young and they become fans for life.

Episode 1 was a very light-hearted movie. Even Qui-Gonn's death is brief and glossed over quickly.

Jar Jar, besides Anakin, became the main figurehead of hate in the prequels.

Keep moving that goal post, Cube.
The original trilogy was rated PG, so not a children's movie.
That merch was marketed for children doesn't surprise me. Lots of things in the 80s had merch marketed towards children.

Ghostbusters had merch marketed towards children, and there's no way you can tell me that movie was created for children. Or to uplift them, as you say Star Wars was.

They made a cartoon for children based on the movie which was in no way made for children.

Kids and young adults. Couple of yards further afield, there aren't we?
And...really? TMNT was made for children? You've read Mirage Volume One, right?

That very well may have been, but the entire point of the triology was to show the progression of Anakin Skywalker's descent into Vader. As evidenced by this teaser poster for Episode One

Anakin is SUPPOSED to be the main figurehead of hate, he's the badguy.
Jar Jar was an attempt at making a lovable character that failed.

Again, you've provided no evidence to your previous claim that
