*sigh*

I don't actually hold any ill-will towards the Rise designers/artists/animators, nor do I hold any grudges towards their supporters. In fact, I wish them the best of luck, and I hope they enjoy the upcoming series.

I'm just voicing my grievances that concern their design choices for these particular characters. (* Note: I don't actually hate (most) of their character designs. I'm just kinda ... ambivalent towards them. *)

If I ever came across as overbearing, then I sincerely and whole-heartily apologize.

I wasn't talking about you, man. I mean outside of this site. You see something like the Splatoon promotion on Facebook & other sites & 80% of the comments are people saying really harsh things purely out of a nostalgia bias. It's disheartening.

Oh. I misunderstood. Sorry about that.

Am I the only one who thinks Rise!Donatello looks absolutely adorkable?

I swear, he's already the best boy!

So, I've viewed this artwork (again):

Spoiler:

I've noticed that Donatello's head is labeled the "Big Brain".

Who has Josh Brener played in Silicon Valley?

Spoiler:

Nelson Bighetti a.k.a. Big Head!

That's a neat reference!

My feelings about the designs are also ambivalent. Mostly because I'm at least 70 percent sure we are going to get some cheap ass animation. Kim Possible may be the only show where characters have sharp edges and no curves but the animation is still fluid. And even in that show there were characters made up with almost no sharp angles to their design. Just from the trailer it looks like during down time its going to be jagged animation central, and then maybe things will look smoother during fights. MAYBE.

As far as Raph is concerned, my favorite Raphael is 87 Raphael. And sometimes I wonder if it is possible to blend the typical hot headed angry Raphael with the sarcasm and wit of 87 Raphael. I don't really...know how Rise Raphael is going to pan out, all I know is he won't be angry. I'm semi interested in this change.

I can at least understand why they felt the need to alter Leo's character but I still don't like it. It's like they are passively saying Leo's typical character archetype is boring, outdated, and needs to be phased out. Where as personalities like Mikey are fine and are left alone.

As far as how they actually look well from worst to best I'd go: Splinter, Donnie, Raph, April, Leo, Mikey.

Splinter...I know this is a cartoon and in cartoons fat squat people can also do kung fu. But not very much about his design is appealing to me. So I'm hoping he has an awesome personality.

Donnie's head is just too big. If the top part was just SLIGHTLY shorter I would like this design more. The exaggeration is just too much for me.

Raph is too big. I'd like his design more if it at least looked like he could feasibly fit down a man hole. He honestly looks like a giant. Like Hagrid standing next to Harry Potter.

April is okay. Her outfit is cute but I don't like her hair. Its just the most generic hairstyle they could possibly give a black girl so it feels lazy.

Leo and Mikey I am the most okay with. I'm not bothered by the markings.

Okay.

Spoiler:

Out of all the villains (revealed so far), I think I like Albearto the most.

His design seems adorably ferocious. I almost wonder what he'll be like.

Origami Foot Ninja aside, I think I agree with you. The Mickey Mouse animatronic chef motif is pretty funny, & visually its design is very TMNT. That mis-matched body damage/robotic parts style evokes the 90's Playmates aesthetic.

I've seen many people criticize April's hairstyle (twin hair-puffs). (In my opinion, I think her hair is okay. They could have done better, though.)

I don't understand the hate. Why do certain individuals strongly dislike it?

People like/prefer different things?

I prefer another hair style that was shown in concept art, but what they gave her is fine enough...

I like the outfit on the middle two, I wish they had gone with that one instead. I guess it looks less like something someone would wear in real life than what they went with, but I don't see why that would be a problem in this show. It's not too late to change it later on, right? They're not going with CGI this time around, they don't have to stick to a single outfit.

Literally any of the other hairstyles would be better. Especially the side ponytail one, that's cute. The puffs look stupid as hell, like she's rocking a mickey mouse hat with a bill on it.

Raph, Donnie and Mikey look the worst. They look like they belong in a minimates spin-off

That would be cute too.

The side one (third from left) I figured was more of a short bob hair style. I like it, but it just doesn't really say 'April' to me for some reason. I know FW April had similarly short hair (sans that much volume), but maybe this one is just too...freshly professionally styled looking? Rather than a look for a girl who has been swinging a magic bat at villains alongside a handful of mutant Turtles.

Haha, that's a good one. Somebody about the hair, glasses, and slacks under the skirt on Rise April just makes me think more of Fred Wolf Irma.

Certain individuals are now saying that Rise!Donnie resembles a girl. Um ... how?

Spoiler:

Eh ... I just don't see it.

And even if he did somehow resemble a girl, I don't see how that would be a problem.
