I can't speak for the Disney magazine covers, but in the parks they had Star Wars, Indiana Jones, and the Muppets. Disney owns the first and third now, but didn't when they were added to the parks. And they still don't own Indiana Jones.

I DO seem to remember Power Rangers making a few appearances on the old Disney Adventures magazine (which were not owned by Disney at the time) plus a variety of movie franchises like The Mask and Batman during the 1990s. The Turtles might have been the first: https://disney.fandom.com/wiki/Disney_Adventures

Sad. Granted, I had assumed it pretty much already had, for all intents and purposes, but still sad to see it made official. I suppose the stock of stuff they wanted to sell off on eBay has reached its end and that'll be that.

Don't they? I know Paramount has some distribution rights, possibly forevermore... but Disney owns the IPs, surely.

Just looked it up. I guess it was included in the Star Wars/Lucasfilm acquisition. Now I know!

I only go to Miragelicensing every six weeks or so since it's just random retro figures sold on Ebay. That being said I have yet to see the message. It's sad. It's ninjaturtles.com. I remember discovering it in July 1998 on one of my earliest explorations of the internet. It was a Friday ritual for over a decade in the closing of my formative years. Like Winters despite it already being a dead studio I feel a gut punch and sadness about this.

Well... Considering something I wrote this or last week, it kind of feels like nothing. Like sure, this is the official end but in any practical sense the company has been dead for a decade, it essentially didn't exist long before this news. The last time they published something new was in 2014 and that just a 30 page comic that was literally given away for free. And I literally haven't ever benefited from their direct existance ever as all my copies of Mirage Studios comics are IDW reprints, nearly all comics they could reprint legally have been reprinted by IDW anyway, I could not buy directly from them anyway because I don't live in the US, there is no secondary source to buy their publications from and the only Mirage TMNT comic I have that isn't an IDW-reprint and IDW haven't printed is one I came across used by luck. In a symbolic sense I guess it's sad but I'm not going to act like this is something to care about in any meaningful way.
The only actual meaningful question is, does Peter Laird lose the rights to finish the comic nobody here thinks he even cares to finish? |

bit of a bummer but honestly they were just a shadow the last 12 years anyway.

Saw it just now over on Facebook and came here right away.
My only question is, as a few have expressed, if this means that Peter Laird is definitely not finishing vol 4. It was a long shot for sure, but this would be a 100% "NO" and that's a big downer really. |

It's not so much a for sure "no," it's just not a good sign at all. Like, it wouldn't have cost much of anything to keep the light on in the "Publishing" side just in case. Which isn't to say he NEEDS the light on with Publishing to do more Vol. 4. Again, it's just not a good sign.

The last time we got a new Vol. 4 issue it kinda just came out of no-where. I'm not getting my hopes up at all, I don't think we'll ever see any new material again, personally, but the site shutting down has little to do with it. All Mirage had been the last decade was a liquidation sale. Most of the guys had emptied their offices & worked on stuff from home, as I understand it. One person popped in a week to ship orders, & occasionally another of the gang would pop in to grab art supplies or an old collectible. The ship sailed with the buyout in 2009, so I'm none too gutted by this. We all knew it was coming & may well have already happened ages ago. Most old-school fans did their mourning already, so to speak. Mirage will live on in our hearts & through future commissions from Dooney & fan projects featuring Lawson. I only wish I had the opportunity to see the place in person while it was still active, that would've been super cool.

I was pretty taken aback when I read the news on Facebook during my break at work earlier. I even tried to contact Dan Berger about this on Facebook, though it looks as if he may have left that site, so I'm writing him an e-mail. To be completely honest, I'm more upset over the idea that Dan isn't going to bother posting the Archie comics stuff on the Mirage Group website than Volume 4 possibly never being concluded.

I mean when you stop to realize all of the Mirage staff are in their 60's now, it is pretty obvious they're all senior citizens. Within the next 15-20 years, as morbid as it sounds, most of them will be dying off. It's obvious most of them are in retirement or heading there soon.
With no TMNT comics to publish, there was nothing to do. |

PL is 67 right now, how long do you think he'll live? He seems like he takes care of his health so I can definitely see him pushing way passed 80. Maybe 85-90.

I'm looking at the end of Mirage as the literal end of the Mirage turtles, and the independent comic scene of that era. Mirage has always had that underground vibe to it. They were the punk rock of comics. They published their own stuff, worked with their friends, and made the comics they wanted to.
I know the TMNT are Nick property, and have been for close to ten years now, but Mirage was always in the background, with a possibility of V4 getting completed, or a random comic that one of the guys would do. I know that a lot have them have done Kickstarters, but to me I had always thought something new would get a Mirage release. In this era of giant corporations owning every license, and changing them into one homogenized product, Mirage Studios serves as the benchmark for what a studio/publisher can be. Make the comics you want, with the artists you want, and don't worry about the bottom line. |
