Robert Downey Jr In Dr. Dolittle Remake (January 2020

Quote:
"After losing his wife seven years earlier, the eccentric Dr. John Dolittle (Downey), famed doctor and veterinarian of Queen Victoria's England, hermits himself away behind the high walls of Dolittle Manor with only his menagerie of exotic animals for company. But when the young queen (Jessie Buckley, Wild Rose) falls gravely ill, a reluctant Dolittle is forced to set sail on an epic adventure to a mythical island in search of a cure, regaining his wit and courage as he crosses old adversaries and discovers wondrous creatures.

The doctor is joined on his quest by a young, self-appointed apprentice and a raucous coterie of animal friends, including an anxious gorilla (Oscar winner Rami Malek), an enthusiastic but bird-brained duck (Oscar winner Octavia Spencer), a bickering duo of a cynical ostrich (The Big Sick's Kumail Nanjiani) and an upbeat polar bear (John Cena, Bumblebee), and a headstrong parrot (Oscar winner Emma Thompson), who serves as Dolittle's most trusted advisor and confidante."

Joining Downey include Jessie Buckley, Harry Collett, Tom Holland (Dog), Rami Malek (Gorilla), Octavia Spencer (Duck), Kumail Nanjiani (Ostrich), John Cena (Polar Bear), and Emma Thompson (Parrot). Other stars include Antonio Banderas, Michael Sheen, and Jim Broadbent. Dolittle is directed by Stephen Gaghan (Syriana) from a script he co-wrote with Thomas Shepherd. Susan Downey produced the film under her Team Downey banner with Jeff Kirschenbaum and Joe Roth.

Gee, I wonder how many people will complain about how they replaced Eddie Murphy with a white guy...

I've seen a few. But it seems to stem from those that either just love the original (which fine, nostalgia and stuff) or those that didn't even know that there was a 60's version.

They'd be pretty braindead considering the one in the 60s had a white guy in the starring role

No one cares about the 60s movie, hell no one will care about this one either, I guess in the original stories he was white so whatever.

When people think of Dr. Doolittle they think of Eddie Murphy, but they already direct-to-video the hell out of that continuity with her daughter who became the new doolittle so no way to continue it, especially since Kyla Pratt looks like she ate her former self.

They might as well have this reboot that will bomb and people will continue to have fond memories of that first Eddie Murphy film.

People will go see it because of Robert Downey Jr. Whose a huge box office draw post Endgame.

You're gonna have a hard time proving that at this moment considering his last movie WAS Endgame.

And as we've seen, people's MCU "Cred" Doesn't necessarily extend outside of those specific films. Every Avenger has had several other films do mixed-to-poor business before, during and after the tidal wave of popularity of "Infinity War/Endgame".

People love to see those folks get dolled up in CGI costumes and zip around shooting lasers at each other, but none of them are bulletproof outside of that specific arena.

As probably the only person on here who owns the entire Dolittle book collection, let me just say...

Downey might be playing Dolittle in the same vein as Sherlock Holmes or Tony Stark, but thank God this will at least be a step up from those atrocious Eddie Murphy movies.

How are the Eddie Murphy movies atrocious? I haven't watched them in over a decade.

It's on track to be a gargantuan dud. Also, apparently the reshoots are the worst parts of the movie:

That isn't fair to say. People cared about the Eddie Murphy version. It even had like 3 or 4 sequels, apparently.

Yeah, but Eddie was only in the 1st 2. The next several follow his daughter who inherited his abilities.

I saw it for my wife's birthday (we had a AMC gift card, planned on seeing Little Women, but missed the last showing.) And we were both surprised by how much we liked it...but we are parents of kids in the target demographic.
