Diamond Comics Distributors Files Chapter-11
Another interesting development for the state of modern comic books....
For a very long time Diamond was the only distribution game basically across the entire industry, but in recent years a lot of publishers have found ways to jump ship and distribute their books through other means such as Penguin Random House. In recent years the buying of new books has fluctuated because of things like social-debates and movie marketing; but I put this particular outcome squarely on Diamond's years of monopolistic business model getting too comfortable and failing to adapt. This is the kind of fate we want to see for places like Comcast who have similar regional monopolistic practices. It's a slow ship to turn, but once their are options and it happens the ship sails far away. A buddy of mine over at Advanced Iron summed it up perfectly: Basically, Diamond got WAY too comfortable since they had the Marvel/DC golden gooses. They did nothing to grow the industry or help indie publishers thrive in their environment. If they would have invested the time and money to do so, the business would be in much different shape and they could have weathered Marvel and DC leaving(If they ran it right it wouldnt have happened). They had way too much hubris, and here we are. |
