I personally love the 80s, but the 70s and 90s have good stuff too

That is a very hard question to answer for me. I don't know that I can do it on it's own merits. I'm practically compelled to divide it up like "80's pop", "90's rock" and so on across movements.

Early 90's dance and club culture, etc.

80s, 90s, and early 2000’s

late 80s and all 90s is peak for me. I'm biased since that's when I was young I guess. Love lots of music from all different eras though. But just on a personal level, I feel popular music started to fall off considerably by (at latest) 2010 and hasn't recovered.

My personal theory is this is due to the decline of people learning to play instruments. Fewer people learning means fewer musicians that play instruments, which is part of why so much music today is made on a computer instead.

Funny, I was listening to an '80s playlist with my 2 year old son in the car today. It made me think about being a kid in the '80s..my parents mostly listened to '80s music then. So me listening to '80s music now would have been like them listening to '40s music when I was a kid. Here I am exposing my kid to music made nearly 40 years before he was born. What kind of father am I ?

There was something magical about lots of hair spray, those wild hairdos, spandex, and those memorable songs that were aired back when MTV and VH1 were still competing with each other to who could get the most ratings.

We loved it all.

Music peaked in the 1920's.

60s' through 80s', pop rock at it's peak. The months before the British Invasion through the the end of the decade had The Beatles, The Rolling Stones,The Beach Boys, Simon and Garfunkel, Creedence Clearwater Revival,The Four Seasons all in their heights. Not only that but the Golden Age of Motown 1959 through 1973 when it relocated to Los Angeles was throughout the decade of the 60s'. Not to mention the only time pop instrumentals not performed by Kenny G were produced to acclaim. I have a monster Playlist of 60s artists and hits. Same for the 80s', my second favorite decade with the likes of Billy Joel, Tom Petty, Hall & Oates, Chicago, Journey, Starship at its peak, Huey Lewis, Bon Jovi, Aerosmith,Queen, and more.

The 70s' has a weaker selection with the peaks of 60s' greats largely behind, but as bad as a rep as Disco has in hindsight but Earth, Wind, and Fire, Kool and The Gang, and The Bee Gees peak in this period (actually it was the Gibb Brothers second peak).There is also The Eagles original 8 year run.

The oldies pop rock is my jam!

Music from the 1930's and 40's didn't age that well. Remember teenagers in the 1970's and 80's laughting at Bing Crosby, Judy Garland and Frank Sinatra?

Today, ABBA, Aerosmith, Chicago, Whitney Houston, Michael Jackson, Dolly Parton, Queen and Roxette are still played nonstop on the radio, 40–50 years later. But instead of laughting, young people become the next generation of fans.

very true, while I sometimes still enjoy outdated stuff, either due to liking the genre or just for "camp" reasons, I can see why it's not for everyone and why stuff like Queen or ABBA has more replayability.

I'd say Sex Pistols is another band that hasn't aged well, it's a product of it's time, while I like a few tunes, the music quality wasn't good compared to other alt bands at the time.


I suppose the fact music from later decades had more variety also helped.
