Is "the fingerhole" really a racist symbol?
I'm seeing a lot on social media finding pictures of people making the "fingerhole" symbol as pointing to it as a sign of "White power!" Like, "See? This person is making the sign! They are a racist!" https://www.nbcnews.com/video/u-s-co...m_npd_nn_fb_ma This is thoroughly bullsh**, right? This is craziness, isn't it?

No? Around here it's a game of like, "ha, made you look, now you feel dumb". You make the circle, someone looks at your fingers, they feel stupid, victory. I've even seen memes of it on the internet.

Well... has it been hijacked by white supremacists? Wouldn't be the first time they hijacked something and ruined the meaning forever. Can't say I've heard anything about this "issue" nor care. Is it even worth discussing...?
Really I'm more interested in whether or not the MMA(?) guy has a brontosaurus on his butt. |

I've known Italians to use this gesture to convey a host of different things, such as:
-Delicious! -Where's my money? -What the f**k are you doing? As for the "fingerhole" it's just meant to gesticulate things like "OK" or precision, then of course there's the game where someone holds their hand low in that position & if you lay eyes on it, you get hit. It has become a meme through emoji's as well, just a short of sh*tposty hilarity thing. I know this is a bait thread but the whole thing stems from people trying to vilify Trump & his supporters. "They" saw him using it in speeches, saw internet trolls using it in memes, & created a false link between the two that creates the false image of some ugly undercurrent of hatred. It's just a gesture.

Yeah, this is the Italian hand gesture meme, indeed. It's kinda funny how hand gestures can have completely different meanings depending on where you are.

It started as a 4Chan prank spreading false information that it was a KKK hand symbol. But I wouldn't be surprised if racists starts/started using it "ironically" and the just straight up appropriate it. Apparently that happened to milk as a symbol???
And racists groups do have a history of taking benign symbols and take it as theirs, one of the reasons why you have to do a whole butt load of research if you want to join a Norse/Viking group or a Åsatru faith group cause they might be Neo-Nazis, something my partner found out the awkward way. |

May I ask, what is with all the bait threads lately? I promise I'm not trying to stir things up by asking (although I feel these threads are trying to) I am genuinely asking?

These threads are definitely trying to. Seems that some adults don't ever quite outgrow a love of stirring up drama and indulging in some started by others.

If Andrew's intentions were ever anything but sincere and noble, I dare say I may get the vapors.

I'm not saying I haven't posted some threads intended to stir the pot in generally positive or at least informative ways, but this isn't one of them. I'm genuinely curious, as I feel like I either missed something big or, well... it's hard to believe the people propagating this (what's the right term here, "hard liberals"?) are off their rocker quite this much.

I wasn't even aware this was remotely a thing. And even looking at it still, I don't even think it is.
It's not worth giving any attention to.

A lot of people are off their rockers, or maybe hyper vigilant (possibly with a skewed view of reality to some degree) and feel it their duty to sound the alarm is a more appropriate description.
It's hardly just "hard liberals" though. The conspiracy theory lovers on the right (and those that concoct it and feed it to them), all of those who are still damned certain that Obama isn't an American and was just out to destroy the country, that liberals want to destroy the country, and all those who are now convinced that all immigrants are out to get us, and so on, are certainly the other side of the same exact coin. They're all just so damned certain that the sky is about to fall. Which is probably exactly what control/power hungry fear mongers on any side want people to think. |
