I think they were given bad copies which are slowly but surely becoming the default versions for all the streaming options. The quality simply used to be better and closer to the original DVD release. But someone got their grubby little unqualified hands on them and ruined them with bad deinterlacing and some kind of denoising causing blurring.

Yeah and I recall that at one point the streaming versions had the wrong color spaces. It's a shame, but when Nickelodeon bought the IP I think we all knew this show would never see the light of day properly again.

One thing that has always confused me about this show is how detailed the digital linework is at times, especially around seasons 4-5, when it was going to be broadcast to tiny boxy television sets. They noticeably scaled it back for FF. Subpar encoding may suffice for other cartoons of the time, but this show suffers a lot for it.

(Incidentally does Turtles Forever stream in HD anywhere? I remember there were going to be theater showings of it at some point.)

Can someone literally post a clip showing what the video quality looks like? Is it exactly the same as the 2k3 series that you can buy digitally? So digital buyers are not getting any better quality than these DVDs?

Video review of the set with quality comparisons to previous DVDs as well as Paramount+. Seems a lot of the quality issues might be more sporadic. (Minus Turtles Forever.)

Seems like that video confirmed the eps on Paramount+ are actually artificially brightened and the DVD set is closer to how the eps are supposed to look. Turtles Forever is edited which is a shame, but if you have the UK Region 2 DVD I would hold onto that.

I guess it's worth it to have every episode in order. So what it is missing:

1. Old T-Files shorts (Seasons 1-4) they had variations of these in the first 4 seasons that had some new animation and new scenes.

2. Mayhem from Mutant Monster Island, basically a "lost" Back to the Sewer episode, but you can watch it on youtube. It's basically a glorified ad for the toys and of ambiguous continuity with the show.

3. The Peach nova comedy shorts, but those are on youtube.

4. Unedited Turtles Forever

5. 3 second edit of Tengu Shredder being sliced in half.

Another cool bonus -- which Paramount almost definitely doesn't have :/ -- would be the storyboard for the unfinished FF episode.

Also for a boxset that's basically 15 years overdue, and in an age where physical media is being phased out for digital media or online streaming, it's a miracle this exists at all. I thought it was way too "late" to get a DVD set, now that DVD's are basically being phased out from stores besides high profile movies.

It's kind of interesting how the media landscape really changed. If this DVD set came out back in say...2010 or something, it would make a far bigger impact than coming out now in 2023. The entire way people consume media has completely changed over the last decade.

It’s a real shame too. I will never understand how people so willingly gave up the rewarding feeling of buying physical media and having something to show for their investment. Just like with music; it was a very rewarding feeling to wait for a music store to open, go into the store, finding the newly released CD from your favorite band, proudly taking it to the cashier and buying it, opening it up and smelling the freshly printed ink while holding the booklet in your hands as you look at the artwork as the new music plays for the first time. It stimulated all of my senses (well, except taste). But now, people frustratingly settle for instant gratification and the illusion of “convenience”.

When one of my favorite bands went digital-only, I bought one album from them to download and it left such a hollow, empty feeling in me that I could only listen to it about two times. I didn’t actually “own” anything and had nothing to show for my spent money; there was no pride in what I spent my money on. I simply paid for the ““privilege”” to push the “Play” button on my phone and listen to it on my rinky dink phone speakers. Despite still loving the band, I haven’t bought any of their additional music because it is no longer a rewarding experience. I just tell myself that they broke up after their last physical CD release and go without their newer music. It sucks, but digital media is simply not what I want, so I will not pay for it. I am keeping my membership with the Disney Movie Club with the sole hope that they will (eventually) offer the upcoming “X-Men ‘97” series from Disney+ on DVD, even if only a “Club Exclusive” DVD release. I will be very upset if it never gets a DVD release. I loathe the digital monster that our instant gratification-worshipping society created and I have zero interest in feeding the beast myself.

I just got done watching the video. Since he talked about retailers, I'll just say that I ordered mine from Best Buy's site. Barnes & Noble's site also has a listing for it.

I guess I'll just use the set for seasons 1 through 4, and 7. I'll hold on to my Ninja Tribunal set since the final episode is intact, and I may want to hold on to my Fast Forward DVDs of which I have both volumes.

I'm keeping the first eight volumes that make up the first season since they have special features, and I didn't get the two 2-disc volumes that made up the first season.

I got the two 2-disc volumes that made up the second season since they have the episodes in order, and I gave away the volumes with the season 2 episodes because the order is mixed up with them. I'm only keeping volume 13 since it has a special feature on it.

I think I can also stand to ditch my volumes with the third and fourth seasons since they also mix up the episodes, although I'll say it was kind of cool how some of them had episodes on them that could be seen before they aired on TV.

I recorded the season 7 episodes on two VHS tapes, but I'm only missing the first episode. With this new set though, I won't be needing those tapes anymore.

He says to hold on to the individual release of Turtles Forever, and I guess I'll do that. I recorded that on a tape, and I was able to copy it to a recordable DVD, and it's the uncut version.

I'll need to order it later on, Probably after I come back from the cruise, I intend to get all the episodes and bonus content and put them on my plex server.

So basically it seems like the new set isn’t terrible but not as good as it could’ve or should’ve been. But to get a 20-year-old show on a new DVD in 2023 is still quite an achievement lol. I was going to sell off all the old DVDs (that I spent way too much money on last year…) and get this, but now I’ll at least keep the Ninja Tribunal set due to the edit, and the Turtles Forever disc due to how they botched it in the new set.

It’ll be nice to at least have seasons 3 and 4 in proper order on disc, and the final season on disc at all. I’ll get the set when it goes back down to ~$53 or lower.

It blows my mind this show is 20 years old now. To put that into perspective, this show is older now than the gap between the original cartoons debut in 1987 to when this started back in 2003. Like the time gap does not feel as long, but knowing it's even longer really blows my mind.

The passage of time is mind boggling.

Based on the episode count, it's safe to assume that BttS IS on this, right? And the unaired episode? If nothing else, I'm getting it for that. Will probably just wait to see if I can spot a discount offer at some point.

This one doesn't feel weird to me... The one that gets me is those teens (and young 20s?) who talk about 2012 having been their childhood, as if it was forever ago. lol I know it's because time feels like it moves slowly in childhood, but man... to me that one still feels like it was just yesterday!

If you're referring to "Insane in the Membrane" it's there (and I think it was eventually aired). But if you mean "Nightmares Recycled", that one was never completed.

Okay, so I finally got mine, and now that I've seen it for myself, I don't know what some of you are talking about. There's nothing wrong with the resolution or the picture. It looks perfectly fine.

Thanks, prob the first...ep 110 I think? Can't recall if I've even seen it.

Shame that other wasn't completed. Gee... maybe someone should pick that script back up, if it was any good, and expand it into a direct to video movie, just saying.

edit: Never mind, I guess the unfinished one would have been 110.

Only one ep were unfinished, one from Season 5 that planned to have Garbageman and Hun as co-joined twins separated at birth (no animation was ever done, there was just a script that was rejected), so it's not a real episode because it was never actually made.

The other was the planned second season of Fast Forward, the first ep, "Master Fighter 2105" has a full voice acting for the whole episode and animatrics but never completed animation. So it was never a real ep either as it was never finished.

Ah, thanks for the info!

Never saw 2003 until around 2014 and knew there was at least one that wasn't aired and/or completed, but always been a little foggy on that being so late after all those discussions were probably done and gone.

I greatly appreciate the review and thanks for sharing it.

Disappointing but not surprising to find out it's in the same kind of DVD case as the complete OG set and the complete 2012 set. They'll look nice next to each other at least.

The video quality issues are a bummer, especially the awful ghosting on Turtles Forever. My friend tells me modern upscaling tech automatically adds side bars to 4:3 upscales to make them 16:9 so that's probably what they did for the HD digital releases and then downscaled that for the DVDs which is about the laziest way they could have gone about making both an SD version and an HD one. These companies straight up forget that DVD players and Bluray players will automatically add black bars to 4:3 video on DVD.

Massive shame that Turtles Forever is the worst cut around and not even the one that was on DVD prior. I wasn't gonna get rid of my single DVD of that either way but that's all the more reason to hold onto it.

Pretty stupid that they're using edited down versions of anything but I doubt Viacom is aware that they are even doing that. That Ninja Tribunal set remains as valuable as ever.

I collected the first 5 seasons with each individual release and got the half season sets (I misplaced season 2's sets though which sucks) and in recent years picked up the Fast Forward sets to finish that collection minus BttS. Downsizing be darned, you can pry those DVDs from my cold dead hands!

But I was looking forward to having Back to the Sewers on DVD and having all the episodes in order. I'll probably pick this up eventually if it doesn't immediately stop being printed but for ease of viewing it made more sense for me to buy the digital version on iTunes and Vudu for 24.99 each. That's an absolute steal for over 150 episodes.

Now I have all four TMNT cartoons in their entirety on Vudu to watch whenever I want without having to keep a Paramount+ subscription or whatever.

So it is it true the DVDs are actually better quality than the digital versions they have online? I'm seeing conflicting information.
