Yeah, it's official. Dave Sim's been doing this thing for the last year or so. Since he still has rights to #8 due to his original involvement, he decided to do a remaster of it and touch up the art. In anticipation of it, he's released two production logs/fanzines called "Pieces of Turtles 8," which detail a bunch of behind the scenes stuff from the creation of TMNT #8, notes, and old sketches. Both were funded through kickstarter. Following that, he just released an ashcan issue of TMNT #8, ahead of the Kickstarter for the final version of the remastered issue.

I saw the Ashcan posted, but I'm not paying $100 for that...

If the Kickstarter is reasonably priced, I'll do that.

I picked up both Pieces of Turtles 8 fanzines last year and they were pretty cool retrospectives, though I understand the appeal is pretty niche (you gotta be REAL into Mirage TMNT history).

As for the ashcan, I got in on it during the 24 hour preorder sale, when the basic edition was just $30. Likes others, I really wouldn't pay $100 for it now. Then again, these will probably wind up going for triple that on the ridiculous collector's market, so maybe it's worth it?

If all you really want is the remaster of TMNT #8, then just wait until March 1. It'll go live on Kickstarter then.

Is this that issue that had Cerebus in it and was redrawn to remove him?

Yes, this one right here:

Only officially released in a Spanish-language TPB because it turned out Dave Sim was perfectly content to let Peter Laird/Mirage/et. al. reprint the issue after all. Years, later Arseniy and crew put together a fan-reprint with English re-lettering.

It was redrawn to be a completely different story. The origin of Savanti Romero, basically.

Pre-Orders are open on Kickstarter and $5000 initial target is already funded.

And the variant covers... OH, the variant covers! I am seriously impressed.

I wasn't expecting so much choice, but a good problem to have, I guess. Went ahead and got the Dooney and Lawson covers along with Pieces of Turtles 8.3.

The only example of "resmastering" is not really promising in my opinion...
I expected some changes to justify printing a new version of this book.

But there is a Jim Lawson cover so I'll probably pull the trigger!

Based on the background on the rights that was provided, I suspect the book was redrawn simply because Sim doesn't have the files to the original. But maintains the right to reprint/republish without permission from or compensation to the TMNT side.

In short, it's a money grab that will probably pay off pretty well for him.

I am tempted to go in at the $600 level and just resell the covers I don't like/want. Can probably get most of my money back the way these things go.

This is what I suspected too, but the low res preview image looks like it is just a contrast adjusted version of the old art. That's fine if it's well done, but I guess the more interesting stuff is probably the Pieces of 8 books and of course the new covers.

The agreement does make it confusing that 8 is missing from the compendium book. Seems like it shouldn't have been an issue to include it.

There wouldn't have been files back then. I'm sure Kevin and Peter drew the pages and then they just let Dave Sim draw Cerebus wherever he showed up and then Kevin and Peter kept the original pages, which presumably Viacom/Nick has kicking around now in a vault somewhere.
