A New Hope, because it kicked off not only Star Wars, but also new space craze, just like Star Trek did 11 years earlier.

Oh I wouldn't underestimate them. There are plenty of people(?) out there willing to force themselves to like them.

Wow, I managed to miss that, I just saw the thread title and thought 'Empire' and just went for that, though Jedi is close.

Even though that it's my own poll, I have to vote as well.

I vote Phantom Menace, because it's the only Prequel that I enjoyed.

If I had a option to vote more than once, I would vote for Empire.

Return of the Jedi. It was a great conclusion to the trilogy, no Palpatine clones, and the only Skywalker that died was Anakin.

It's a close second to me, personally. Yeah there's Ewoks and some funny things in the first act but the catharsis is high and it's all earned. It doesn't work well independently, though. You couldn't like snatch VI out of a bag without seeing IV and V and it be nearly as meaningful... which is the only spot is loses points with me.

Let's try this again...

1. IV
2. VI
3. V

All of those were pretty close together in quality. Like almost neck and neck. Then a slight but significant drop and then...

4. I
5. III
6. II

Now a big drop, then we have...

7. VII
8. IX

Another drop, and then...

9. VIII

Rogue One and Solo? Eh. Probably between II and VII, in no particular order.

I don't quite understand ranking IX uner VIII.

Sure, VIII's plot relies on Holdo arbitrarily not telling anyone about her plan and Finn/Rose being idiots at a casino, but at least it's coherent.

IX is a mess on every level. The script is built on a series of retcons and the final film is clearly edited to **** because there's a bunch of plot threads that go nowhere. Also, everyone interjecting meaning in what off-lighting Leia is just awkward.

VIII killed Star Wars. That's why.

As an adult, I'm between ROTS and ESB but TPM was such a comfy movie to watch on VHS tape in the family den when I was in elementary school. I remember liking it more than Clones but that opinion has changed over time. Episode II has so much connective tissue with all the others and that gives it a different kind of appeal for me.
