Battle Angel Alita

After years of development it looks like this is finally moving forward.

In October it was announced that Robert Rodriguez would be directing.

Today it was announced that the title role has been cast - Rose Salazar.

It's good to see this is still happening. I thought Jim Cameron would be too bogged down with Avatar sequels to ever actually do it.

I really would have liked to see what James Cameron's version would have been like. I do not like Robert Rodriguez as a director and am not impressed with the casting of the main character.

just like Ghost in the Shell, doesn't matter if the movie is good or not, as long as I get the "Deluxe" editions, I'm good. Though wish those translations did keep Alita's original name "Gally"

Oh well, what can you do.

Maybe the original anime will get a get a re-release, too.

Big budget anime adaptation? Modern day Robert Rodriguez at the helm? This doesn't bode well at all. And how long until "those people" start complaining the whole cast isn't Japanese, or whatever?

I really like Rosa Salazar. She can pull off tough and has a pretty unique look.

I don't mind her looking like a real-life anime character. When people make robots like that you can bet your pants someone will make'em like a cartoon character, so I guess it's a neat reference to the source material being a manga/anime.

But she does look like one of those 3D artworks depicting carton characters with super realistic skin textures, eyes and wrinkles which is distracting when she seems to be the only one like that.

That's really the actress, though. It's not motion capture (well, I'm sure they painted her real arms green or blue or whatever) or anything. All they did was put a lot of makeup on the actress and cut and paste her eyes back onto the face and made them bigger, anime-like. But that's her real body, real hair, skin, all of that.

Here's the actress:

Movie looks good, not familiar with the source material but I remember as a kid always seeing ads on anime magazines.

I still gotta watch GOTS, movie didn't look bad, I don't care what critics say.

Interested to see it myself. Though it has so many even non-SJW-influenced reviews ("Why isn't everyone Japanese??? BOYCOTT THIS AMERICAN ADAPTATION!!!") destroying it... I would have to put the odds that it's actually any good pretty low.

I probably would have drug myself to the theater to see it if it was R-rated. Not a whole lot of enthusiasm for movies with a bunch of people shooting and killing each other if they can't even show it. Let's see if "Alita" is allowed to actually have any teeth.

I love it and I'm so excited but by God her eyes are giving me goddamn nightmares! I get the "anime style" they are going for, but damn.... bring it down just a notch.

They're not a deal breaker for me but I do wish they'd have just left the actress alone beyond conventional makeup.

I like what they're doing with the face since it gets you to uncanny valley which is what I"m guessing they're going for.

This looks like a far more respectful adaptation of its source material than GiTS turned out to be.
