Turtles the arcade game special in Retro Gamer magazine!
Retro Gamer is a monthly magazine that's been going since 2004, and published in the UK.
Now I'm not sure of the availability of the mag stateside, but ebay is a good place for retrogamer, although the early issues can go for £30 plus. I'll post the link for the official website anyway. It's a fantastic magazine and I'd recommend it hightly to anyone who has been a long time gamer, or anyone who just wants to know about classic games, publishers and systems of old. Turtles in Time on the SNES has already appeared in the mag a couple of years ago under the "classic Game" article, but this has been a long time coming, at last the original arcade game gets 8 pages dedicated to it and it's conversions. It's issue 98 btw. Here is a link to Darran's(mag editor) overview: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M5f3t...ayer_embedded#! The official website: www.retrogamer.net |

Can't wait to read the developer Q&A. |

That RetroGamerDaz fellow just called the NES adaptation "rubish."
And he couldn't even get his insult right; he called it the "less than impressive 16-bit versions." Gee, I had no idea that the NES was 16-bit, and I had no idea there was more than one "16-bit" port ("versionS"). Seriously, what did people expect out of 8-bit? That game was the best beam-em-up available on the system at the time... well, maybe not as good as Double Dragon II, but it was at least more accessible from a difficulty setting. And yet he had the nerve to complement the Spectrum and Amstrad versions.

Erm, he didn't. Actually the NES version is listed as the best version of the lot in the comparison list. I should know, I have the issue here in front of me
The 16 bit versions refer to the Amiga and Atari ST conversions, which were rated below any of the 8 bit versions. If anyone in the US would like a copy of the magazine and can't get it there, I do have a spare copy available. One small boon of being a writer for the magazine I guess...

No worries. And yes, the page in question is divided half between the dev talking about what went wrong with the Amiga/ST versions (left) and copy about the NES version (right), which probably explains the mistake. To be honest, if any of the 8 bit versions had managed two player simultaneous action, they would be rated at the top.

Received the magazine today.
One thing that really disapointed me is that the best details they could get on the cabinet itself was from a guy who converted a Desert Assult cabinet into an American style TMNT Cabinet. Where as i'd have prefered an original UK "Hero Turtles" cabinet as its a UK magazine. Myself and i'm sure many other people in the UK own original turtles cabinets in mint condition and i'm pretty certain would have loved to have been showcased instead. |

To this day, I've never seen good photographs of the UK cabinet from all angles.

I personaly prefare the art and styling of the UK cabinet, the artwork reminds me of Michael Dooney's art that was used for the nes game, and it would be the version that I would hope to buy in the future. It would also have been good if they could have scored some interviews with the guys who actually worked on the arcade game itself, while maybe not a realistic idea it would have been very interesting. |
