There needs to be a fourth option in between average and dirt poor. Something like "I get by". I don't make as much as I really should for someone my age. I work a second job part time to try to help make up for my lack of income from my main full time job.

I have BEEN dirt poor a few times, mostly from 1992-1997 and 2000-2002, but for most of my adult life I'd say "average" or "lower-middle class". When I was very young we were never rich but probably upper/average middle class. My Dad made about a grand a week in 1980s money BUT he also had to support his ex wife and three other kids for part of my earliest childhood, so we weren't exactly swimming in money. I was definitely pretty spoiled for a while, though. Right now I'm on unemployment, but I get enough to get by with some extras and I have money in the bank - though not a lot - so make of that what you will. Never been "rich" and never will be, but I've been pretty much everything else. A few things I've learned: - You can never get too comfortable if you're up near the top, because it doesn't take very much at all to send you right down to the bottom and it can happen quicker than you think. - Nothing is promised and you have no guarantees. - You're basically just a "tube" for money; it comes and goes right through you. No matter how much you have you'll always need more. - Anyone who says either "Money is the root of all evil" and/or "Money can't buy happiness" has never, in the words of Art Alexakis, "had the 'joy' of a Welfare Christmas". I could definitely be a lot better about saving money, but frankly, I've been poor enough times where I was lucky to have milk for my cereal, to the point where when I have the means I'd rather just enjoy life. I've gone without many times, so even if it's irresponsible or whatever I'd rather just have fun while I'm alive.

I would say I make average income. But then again I barely pay for anything, so I save up a lot of money in the bank.
I currently have $164,000 saved up for a rainy day, and about $19,000 in various stocks. My goal is to have $200,000 saved up but that probably won't happen till the middle of next year. |

I'm with cubed. Basically average in my assessment.
Nice work on what you've managed to squirrel away in savings, btw. |

HAH if I stopped paying for anything tomorrow and saved every cent until I died I wouldn't have 200 grand in the bank. Must be nice.
And yeah, way to be a rich thief, scumbag. People who do dodgy sh*t because they have no choice, I can kinda understand, but to have a ton of money in the bank and whine about paying $15 to watch a movie is literally the dirt worst. I wish you HADN'T told us this. Some things you just don't wanna know about a person.

There's "open to free things", and then there's "I can afford things, I just literally refuse to pay for them because I think I'm special."
I'm a wrestler (sometimes), and part of the Wrestler's Code is that you have to be the type of guy who'll drive 300 miles for a free meal and stuff as much food (and beer) as you can in a bag to take home. So I'm not against freebies, goodness knows. I furnished my Dad's entire apartment with free stuff I got off of moving jobs. Nothing wrong with that. It's having the means and the ability to pay for things that aren't even that expensive, and going out of one's way NOT to do so that rubs me the wrong way. BUT, that's the way of the world. Everybody thinks that everyone else should "pick up the slack" for them so they can get around things that the "little people" have to abide by. I get it. I just don't like it. Also starting to think this thread was created for the sole purpose of HumbleBragging, which is always vulgar on its face. BUT, nobody asked me.

Most definitely. Cyber just needed to select an answer to the poll, not reveal his bank account details.

It's called knowing how to save, you'd be surprised how much money you save by cutting out stuff you don't need. $15 for a movie is ridiculous and those type of expenses add up. Cubed is just good at personal finances and clearly likes investigating his money which will only be make him more money.
The amount of money I've saved this year alone has incremented my financial security. Just be smart with money. |
