Peruvian former politician Alberto Fujimori passed away at age 86 last Wednesday, suffering from cancer. He was born in Lima, Peru on 26 July 1938 by Japanese immigrant parents. Between 28 July 1990 and 22 November 2000, he was the President of Peru.

Following accusations of corruption, he resigned and fled to Japan after being caught on videotape when attemtping to convince an oppositional candidate to vote for him during the Peru elections in April and May 2000. When visiting Chile in November 2005, he was arrested by Chilean police. Taken back to Peru, he was sentenced to prison for 25 years.

While being classified as corrupt, some people have justified his actions as a way to handle trouble with the Shining Path left-extremist guerilla, usually regarded as a terrorist movement.
