I have no defense for any would-be assassin of a political figure as I condemn anything of that sort, but I will offer my own brief dissection of his character and mindset based on what we currently know.

He supported Trump in 2016 and apparently up to around 2020 when he soured on him and his policies over time. He did support Democrat candidates after that which you'll notice coincides with around the time of the Russo-Ukrainian war was ramping up, which he makes clear in his writings was a real passion for him. The USA has been a big supporter of Ukraine particularly under Biden whereas Trump would rather pull our support from there, so you can see how this would impact his feelings.

He appeared to be fully behind then-Democrat Tulsi Gabbard and her bid for the 2020 presidential nomination, which Joe Biden eventually won.

He later soured on Gabbard for what he perceived as her alignment with Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin, writing on X in 2022, "why don't you go and Join Putin and trump and be their third wheel."

There was no immediate evidence in Routh's social media postings that he was ever a supporter of Biden or Vice President Kamala Harris.

He threw his 2020 Democratic presidential support behind Sen. Bernie Sanders, I-Vt., while deriding "sleepy Joe" who "stands for nothing; no plans, no ideas, just as limp hillary," he wrote on March 4, 2020.

In his book, listed on Amazon and viewed by the AP, Routh noted, “I get so tired of people asking me if I am a Democrat or Republican as I refuse to be put in a category.”

The truth is that he did have support for Democrats most recently, but he supported candidates across the spectrum and seems less interested in parties and more in policy related to conflicts we are involved in. One comment I read on Facebook described him: "He looks like a MAGA republican but is a registered democrat" which I get, however, he's actually registered as Unafilliated and has been for a long time according to Politifact.

He also supported Hailey and Ramaswamy...

But Routh also wrote in support of Republican presidential primary candidates Nikki Haley and Vivek Ramaswamy, addressing each of them on Jan. 9 with a plea to team up for a White House bid. "Join forces with Nikki Hailey now as VP to make a winning team..please," he wrote to Ramaswamy, misspelling Haley’s name.

So really, he was all over the place.

My own theory as to why he might have wanted to assassinate Trump: If Trump became President, he would pull support for Ukraine which he absolutely does not want to happen.

Im perfectly ok with people legally coming to the USA. I am not ok with Criminals coming into the country. Everyone who crosses the border illegally is a criminal, and their first act coming into this country is to break at least one of our laws.

If we are going to be expected to take care of the citizens of **** hole countries (to use Trumps terminology) then we should probably pull back from doing Europe's job protecting their neighbors from Russia and Palestine and put Central and South America in order. I don't think we should be invading countries, but if we have to spend the money either way around...I think its a much better use of time and money to get rid of cartels to let people live peacefully in their own countries then bankrupt our own citizens like what's happening in New York.

This is a valuable lesson though. Their Socialist Dictatorship was built upon disarming the population.
