2024 Olympic Summer Games

On Friday, the Olympic Summer Games in Paris, France will be inaugurated, though the men's soccer tournament will begin already on Wednesday and the women's ditto on Thursday.

Gone are now the Corona days, and spectators are welcome back. Paris also hosted the Summer Games in 1900 and 1924.

Russia is suspended for invading Ukraine.

Whole opening was pretty good, despite everyone being soaking wet from the rain. lol

But really, most importantly, who the heck is the ghostly looking Assassin's Creed-ish masked figure?? I can't believe we didn't find out. I'm mad that we didn't see him(?) hand off the torch. (Or at least not here because NBC of course had to go to commercials.) Had hoped he'd meet up with the other one on the horse.

Rain, weird stuff, anything to do with Paris and/or France (including Phantom of the Opera musical which isn’t French of course), Lady Gaga with an antenna on her head, pink can can, everyone learning that French is weird with country names, and Celine Deon showing she still actually has it.

I don’t know if the hooded guy was an homage to Assassins Creed or not, but it would be a subtle tip of the hat to the fact that the modelling for the rebuild of Notre Dame was partly based off the accurate models created for the videogame.

Gojira was the best part of the entire opening.

Okay I was reminded of one fact re Greece and celebration in the opening ceremony, and that the Last Supper wasn’t being mocked as so many outraged online have spleen vented…

Oh, please. Show one painting of a Bacchanal that has everyone sitting at a table in the same manner that Jesus and His disciples are in The Last Supper. We’re not stupid. Do you really buy this gaslighting?

And this isn’t the first time Pride has made fun of Christianity. I’d show you examples but due to the nudity and sexual content, I’d probably get in trouble with this site so all I can tell you is to google it yourself.

I give you Caravaggio's 'A Bacchanal with a company feasting and making music'

Those don’t look like “Greek” figures to me. It looks more like a bunch of guys partying in the 16th century with one drunk guy attempting to dress like a Greek figure. And they’re not sitting at a long table all spread out.

Nice try. You know what they’re really trying to do.

Shredder and Krang combined had the biggest arsenal of any villains in all of the cartoons.

Dictionary
Definitions from Oxford Languages
bacchanal

LITERARY
noun
1.
a wild and drunken celebration.
"the event has morphed into one of the most shamelessly drunken bacchanals on the social calendar"
2.
a priest, worshipper, or follower of Bacchus.
adjective
another term for bacchanalian.

Has nothing specifically to do with Greece, ancient or otherwise.

European schools teach it as part of history and geography classes between ages 7 and 12 as par for the course, so if anything it's more the pity that the US educational system is so poor when comes to learning about anything beyond your borders, particularly when you consider just how much influence the rest of the world has actually had when it comes to what is considered 'modern America'.

Okay I automatically was guessing the horse on the water was an "Olympic spirit" symbol, but the Goddess of the Seine part makes it more awesome.

Assuming they're also talking about the runway bit... I never once thought "Last Supper." I don't think a row of people sitting at something that wasn't really even a table is enough to be any homage to that and probably had far more to do with the camera simply being stationed on the opposite side of what was said to be only a footbridge and thus limited space. The extravagant makeup, clothing and party vibe definitely falls in line with the bacchanalia thing.

Not much, imo, but when unknown history and cultural stuff comes up it would probably be way more helpful if people were first and foremost more inclined to ask questions and Google stuff first, rather than make kneejerk assumptions and s*** themselves. (But there's always those who purposely love to find a reason to be outraged.)

Really though, the masked guy better turn up at the closing and be revealed. Even if he's just a nobody, he clearly has gymnast training. No way is just some random person doing one-handed cartwheels so fluid like that with a torch in the other hand.

Assassins Creed suggestions aside, I kind of wondered if he was also the spirit of something, given the more ghost-like gauzy bits of his clothing and where he showed up in that spooky setting after the kids went through a shot of catacombs.

edit: Why did they cut this clip RIGHT there. Looks like he just falls badly onto a deck (or whatever that space is) -- the end.

(But that lady can shut up with the fake enthusiasm.)

Did you not see what their excuse in that post was? They said “it was a depiction of an ancient Greek Bacchanal.” The people in the painting you provided certainly weren’t living in ancient Greek times. And again, they weren’t posing at a long table in a way that mimics The Last Supper.

Also, is no one gonna talk about the underage kid taking part in this blatant display of hypersexuality? Come on, guys, a naked Greek god is singing on the table in front of a child while lying on a plate of food. I’m against child beauty pageants, I’m against the sexualization of kids in movies/TV, and I’m against this. Sue me.

Definitions from Oxford Languages
gas·light

verb
gerund or present participle: gaslighting

manipulate (someone) using psychological methods into questioning their own sanity or powers of reasoning.

The painting of The Last Supper was based on the painting of The Wedding of Dionysus. Which depicts a bachannal and a Greek god. And hangs in the Louvre funnily enough. The big blue man with ivy was representing, surprise surprise, Dionysus.

Enough to know the world doesn’t revolve around America or Christianity, and in fact there are a great many things, like Greek Gods, way older… but surely you know that from Hollywood movies?! And weirdly enough, this sort of thing is taught in schools in Europe, unlike evolution in the American South…

Yup. I saw that garbage on tiktok and I'm glad I wasn't a part of it by watching. All I saw was the still images shown here. I know for a fact that there was a major blackout in Paris after this mess took place. The Lord will judge this.

What are you talking about? The Wedding of Dionysus and The Last Supper look nothing alike.

Also, are you admitting that they are in fact imitating The Last Supper?

I also learned from my school in the American South that Greek gods and goddesses were family members that made out with each other and made babies with mortals, like Hercules, who’s the illegitimate child of Zeus, who’s married to Hera, who’s also his sister. Now you see why Disney left that little detail out.

I also know that Christmas is actually a revised Christian version of Saturnalia, an ancient Roman pagan festival, which was why my old church refused to celebrate Christmas.

You think pointing out the tendencies of Trump-worshipping weirdos is gonna change the fact that a bunch of Pride weirdos made fun of Christianity in front of the whole world, which is only gonna cause support for the LGBTQ community to plummet even further?

Yes, Americans have general history most of their 'careers' in school. We see it constantly on our streets, in our neighbors and media. You are asking America to teach its kids the history of the world is such detail that we recognize every single cultural reference that might come up...including a hyper-specific orgy festival dedicated to a 3rd string god from a long dead religion (who has had screen time in prominent movies). That is a bit much.

I am sure that schools in Europe don't expect you to memorize Ochpaniztli for instance, or the stories of Davy Crockett and Daniel Boone. If they do your kids have much better things to be learning. If they want to look on their own time, or in a specialized college thats on them.
