Maybe it's not going to be good enough for tv, so they decided to risk it with this stupid pay app decision?

Just because it's set in the prime universe doesn't make it good.
starting with the announcment that this thing was going to be raunchier, and the terrible design of the ship that looks more klingon bird of prey then anything...

I don't have any hope that anyone at Paramount knows how to make ST work.

I heard that the series will be a lot more mature, so maybe it wouldn't be good enough for TV.

Raunchier? A lot more mature?
Oh, I see. They're trying to get the Game of Thrones audience, aren't they? It's all beginning to make sense now.

I don't watch HBO stuff but don't they "air" their content through some app? Is that what CBS is trying to replicate?

I think all the channels are going to try making their own channel apps if the industry keeps going the way it is. So many people are cutting the cord because these cable and satellite providers have gotten so greedy over the last 10 years. They keep trying to pay the companies less and less for their channels while raising prices on the consumer.

When I got Directv 8 years ago it was way cheaper than cable. Now it's damn near the same price. If it wasn't for football and my kids watching Nick and Disney I would have cancelled that crap. I would just buy the shows I watch by the episode from Itunes.

Now I heard ATT is trying to buy Time Warner. Not sure exactly how that works because I thought Time Warner had been bought by Comcast.

Edit. To add to my point why would I buy an app from CBS or ABC or Fox when I can get those channels over the air for free?

Casting news:
Michelle Yeoh plays Captain Georgiou (formerly Han Bo), captain of the Shenzhou.

Doug Jones plays Lt. Saru. ATM he's not attached to any ship but he's a science officer and a member of some alien race we've never seen before (because... CGI...)

Anthony Rapp plays Uss Discovery science officer Lt. Stamets who's specialty is astromycology (space fungi)... because yes that's a totally useful occupation... space mushroom expert...

Stamets is going to be an awkward nerd, because he has a really specialized interest. Calling it now.

As probably the biggest Trekkie on the 'Drome, they are doing NOTHING to interest me yet.

Ignoring the Abramsverse is about the only thing that's pleased me so far. Everything else, from setting to ship design to plot scuttlebutt sounds ass.

Word, single other fellow diehard Trekkie on the 'Drome.

Ugh.

Andrew, do you read the novels from Pocket Books at all? The Deep Space Nine relaunch series was amazing.

The series will take place in the prime timeline, but set between Enterprise and TOS.
I'm sure there will be references to Enterprise, and some foreshadowing of TOS.

I haven't read any Pocket Star Trek books in ages. I used to. All the Shatner "SuperKirk returns to life and fights the Borg and others" books, Crossover, Probe (excellent Star Trek IV sequel), Federation, Manifest Destiny... um... the 4 part "Invasion!" series. That's it.

Oh yeah, Shatner's SuperKirk novels. Those were hilarious.

You should really consider checking into the various relaunches; Deep Space 9 was the most successful (and best written, IMO), and Voyager tried and then retried, and Next Generation finally came along, too. (Also Titan, with Riker and Troi and Tuvok aboard the USS Titan, post-Nemesis.) Oh, and Enterprise.

Then the relaunches eventually culminated in a big all-out Borg war, and then continued with new status quos and some new galactic alliances and cold war. My big problem with the relaunches since this is all of the crew are so scattered, it's pretty much impossible to keep track of or enjoy.

Oh, well that fixes everything, doesn't it?

If anything that makes it ****ing worse. Always trying to make itself relevant by calling back or calling forward. This sounds like it'll be worse Trek than the Abrams films.

Fuller wanted Angela Bassett... instead, they get a Chinese cash grab.
