Work has been overpowering me, I want to make some gifs and screencaps from ep 104 but it's beating me down. Maybe I can do some in the morning.

Well since you use GIMP I can't offer any tips, you did great though, so no advice really needed. I use photoshop to make mine, since i make my gifs from the 1080p itunes versions it is a bit harder to make gifs because I have to manually screencap each frame, whereas with non-DRM'd videos you can use virtualdub to dump an entire section of a video to JPG/PNG and it makes it a lot faster.

But since I prefer the unbridled quality of the itunes versions I do it the hard way :p I realize this is overkill though, as huge gifs are undesirable since you can't post them on tumblr and they obviously take longer to load for people not on a 2gbps internet connection like me (thanks, job!). Your gif is perfect because it is just barely under the 500KB limit for tumblr

so it's a battle between compressing the gif and cutting out frames and shrinking/cropping the video segment(s) to find a good balance of a clear and smooth image with filesize. it's fun to play around with!

thankfully the gif format is very flexible, you can reduce the total # of colors to get the filesize down when necessary, for example. you can also DARKEN an image, this will also reduce the filesize a lot of times, the darker the entire gif is the smaller it will be, this probably has something to do with forcing more pixels down to pure-black which also reduces the total # of colors. So if you ever wonder why a lot of GIFs on tumblr look so dark... that would be why

Oh, sweet. I will check out virtualdub for sure. One of the problems I'm having is that it takes forever to load the episode into the player. If I can just cut a scene out first, it would be a lot easier.

Yeah that seems to be the tricky part. I made this one too, but the smaller version takes quite a hit in quality. Really wish tumblr would up their limit to 1MG.

It is super fun. It's amazing how much more detail I'm noticing in the animation (especially during fight scenes) picking it apart like this. They've got some great artists working on this show.
