Page space, not screen time. And yes, they are pointless. There's like 85 names (rounded down) of characters introduced during the Campbell run in the sourcebook, and I swear it's like maybe 15 I remember actually being stated in the actual comic rather than Twitter or something.

Truly, completely useless characters. Why anyone would feel like naming random background characters like these are beyond me.

It's interesting how many characters were written off to give the series a clean slate. They got rid of all the extra Turtles besides Jennika who is Nightwatcher now. Lita turned into a human (we haven't seen the future one but I assume she gets retconned to a human too?), Venus is dead.

Alopex and the 3 weasels left NYC so they're "written off" so to speak out of the main series. Most of the mutant town characters aside from a few like Mona Lisa will probably not appear again outside of background cameos. The Punk Frogs are mostly gone besides Clyde who is with Karai's minions.

While some of them are probably going to appear again eventually, it feels like a "course correction" to me. Sophie added like 3 female mutant Turtles, a whole bunch of mutant sidekick characters and kid mutants who felt like they belonged in a Saturday morning cartoon, a ton of extra female mutants who served no purpose other than to be love interests (like Sheena for Jennika, etc). I hope we see the last of most of them.
