As of today, how do you feel about "Booyakasha"?

I've never liked it replacing the classic "Cowabunga". I know the Turtles did not invent that term either, but at least they're known for popularising it. "Booyakasha", on the other hand, was popularised by Ali G 20 something years ago. No one associates it with the Turtles.

I like Ali G and all, but let's keep things separate. Remember that season 2 episode form the FW series where Michelangelo gets told to say something different for once and as he's about to yell "yabba dabba doo", one of this brothers(forget which one) covers his mouth and tells him something along the lines of "it's just not you."? Now, IMAGINE if the FW series had given the Turtles the "yabba dabba doo!" catchphrase from Scooby-Doo instead of "cowabunga!". Wouldn't that be silly? That's how I feel about "Booyakasha".

Booyakasha was alright in the Nickelodeon series, I didn't mind it. Plus, we got Cowabunga later on in that show anyway with their Mondo Gecko, and then Nick Mikey adopted it, even sometimes combining it with cowabunga to say 'Booyakabunga'

Plus, there is an episode of the Nick show where FW Michelangelo says Booyakasha and Nick Mikey says Cowabunga. I thought that wad a super cool moment.

Shredder and Krang combined had the biggest arsenal of any villains in all of the cartoons.

I don't know, Greg Cipes sure owned "Booyakasha" whenever he let Mikey say it.

Heck, I loved it when the other turtles said it, although I can't remember if Leo ever said it.

They’re both kinda cringe lol. “Booyakasha” is at least just unique to Cipes/2012, whereas “Cowabunga” always has to be a thing for no reason.

I never understood that either, FW Michelangelo had several quirky sayings, but that’s the only one anyone remembers.

How do I feel about it? More less the same feelings I have about the Rise Turtles insisting that their team name is "Mad Dogs", basically a strange and superficial way to "shake things up" that I don't think was necessary.

Like... I think trying to replace "Cowabunga" with something else isn't really an improvement, at most it's a neutral change and quite frankly I have to admit that if you are going to take "Cowabunga" away, then it might be a better move to just not force some other catchphrase and just write dialogue without even have such a silly notion cluttering the script.

And where did the idea of the Turtles needing a catchphrase even come from anyway?

"Yabba-dabba-doo" was from The Flintstones. Scooby Doo yelled, "Scooby-dooby-doo."

Either way, these catchphrases never bothered me. They're just something for the kids to shout while playing with toys.

I guess since I grew up hearing "Cowabunga" it sounds cooler to me.

It just makes me think of Busta Rhymes, or whoever else used to say that a lot in the 90s and 2000s.

And does Cowabunga make you think of Bart Simpson?

Speaking of which, your username does make me think of a catchphrase different from what you intended.

Well, your username reminds me of this iconic scene from Recess:

From "Enemy of my enemy"
Michelangelo: BOOYAKASHA!
Karai: "Booyakasha?" What does that even mean?
Michelangelo: I don't know, but it's fun to yell.

Well, to answer Karai's question...

Possibly of Jamaican origin, as an extended form of boo-ya. Intended as a simulation of a shotgun blast and used in hip-hop, e.g. "Keep Their Heads Ringin’" by Dr Dre (1995) and before that by Boo-Yaa T.R.I.B.E. in the late 1980s. "Booyaka" appears in Shabba Ranks's "Ting a Ling". (Popularised by comedian Sacha Baron Cohen, whose character Ali G used it during the 1990s and early 2000s. Cohen could also have intended it to be a portmanteau of "boo-ya" and the Hebrew word for "you're welcome, which is "bevakasha."

So it's actually quite a bit older than Ali G. And it also incorporates Cohen's Jewish ancestry.

It was something outside of what the 90's Turtles did say. However, the 2012 series was also it's own thing. Thankfully, the people that worked on the series did allow for the OT voice actors to reprise their roles since the 80's Turtles crew did a few cameos in-show.

As for the Booyakasha phrase, either I haven't watched enough of the 2k12 series consistently for it to irk me, or, I basically just said "Eh, whatever.." whenever it was spoken.

Cowabunga is an expression for something awesome, Booyakasha is a battlecry.

I give them credit for trying something new, and at least it was there from the beginning in comparison to the super late for the party 'it's ninja time!' from the 2K3 show.

I'm not sure how far in advance Turtles Forever was in production, but 'it's ninja time' in retrospect felt like a last minute catch phrase thrown in there for the 2K3 Turtles to have something to say to counter the 80's Turtles 'Turtle Power!' whenever they actually got to the crossover.

Having the two Mikeys exchange Cowabunga and Booyakasha just felt more natural than the 2K3 crew remembering 'oh right, we did have that one catch phrase for that one season, didn't we?'

I actually don't mind Booyakasha. I always thought it was very..."Mikeyish". I admit to having used it myself on occasion.
