What exactly are the Y'Lyntians?

I kind of have to wonder. Are they aliens, mutants, convergent evolution or something else? They do look more human than most other humanoid characters in the show but the specific features make me think they're not quite human, I'm not even sure we get to see if they have ears. If they are humans, they sure are strange ones.

Name-wise, they're based on Atlantis, the mythical island that was said to have sunken into the sea thousands of years ago.
