Woah, top 10 list aint my thing, but sure, i can write down the bands and artist that i respect and enjoy most.

Pink Floyd - My all time favorite band. Classic masterpieces like "Piper at the gates of dawn", "Meddle", "Dark side of the moon", "Wish you were here", "Animals" and "The Wall" does still sounds like nothing else.
When Punk, Disco and New Wave killed most of the 70s rock giants, Pink Floyd just keep on doing what they wanted, and produced some of their finest work. When glam rock and pretty boy and girl bands ruled in the 70s, suddenly Pink Floyd and other classic progrock acts made people think with their intelligent lyrics about how sick our society has become.

Frank Zappa - Genius or lunatic? Whatever folks call him or his music, it is truly made by a man who knew music in and out in every way. He made almost 50 albums, and i dear you to check them out. Frank went from Psychedelic, jazz, doo-woop, avant-garde, progressive rock, classic, blues, heavy rock, punk, new wave, damn is there any musical style he didnt go into?
Most people know him by songs like "Bobby Brown" or "Dont eat the yellow snow", but dont know a thing about his other work. So dont judge him by the stupid lyrics, well stupid aint right sick and twisted, and very ofte hillarius lyrics. Anyway, to Frank the music was always the most important thing, not the lyrics. He had some fine musicians with him along. Steve Vai, George Duke, Ruth Underwood and Terry Bozzio. If you hade been in the Mothers of invention, you had go trough the best music school there is.
Sure Frank was tough, he hated drugs and none of his band mates were allowed to fool around when they worked with albums or did gigs.
Frank was also one hell of a guitarist. Once youre hooked to Zappa and his magnificant music you will never get tired of it.

Kraftwerk - The godfathers of well, almost anything that is played on the radio or tv today. Where would hip hop or electronica been without Kraftwerks classic albums? You can hear samples from Kraftwerk in so many hip hop and rock tunes. Last year Coldplay had a big hit with a song called "Talk". That had sampled the theme from Kraftwerks haunting hit "Computer love". When almost every rock act in the 70s had english band names, and tried to copy english and american bands to become popular, Kraftwerk did their best to hold on to the German roots, and show the world where they are from. When Kraftwerk become popular with "Autobahn" they traveled to America, and suddenly people on the streets shouted nazis and give them the "Heil" sign. Kraftwerk were horrified by the media and their ignorance. Their music and image was different to what was goin on in the popular culture. They were aleways one step ahead. With classics cds as "Trans-europe-express", "The Man Machine" and "Computer love" they inspired new generations of music lovers. The lyrics are often cheesy, but sarcastic and funny.

King Crimson - Another classic progressive rock band from the early 70s.
They had big sucess with their debut album "In the court of the crimson king" in 1969. But soon the band was just well Robert Fripp, and the legendary guitar hero and band leader did an impressive job to continue under the name King Crimson with different muscisians over the years.
Their music is very complex and well, sometimes weird. But give it a chance.
In 1973 Robert Fripp and his new lineup made maybe one of the greatest albums of the 70s "Larks tongues in aspic". It had Bill Bruford the drum genius from Yes on it. Further classic albums "Red", "Discipline", "Starless and bible black" and "Beat".

Ultravox! - Most famous for their 1981 hit "Vienna" or their other big 80s hit "Dancing with tears in my eyes" from 1984. But long before the trenchcoats, and cheesy moustaches, they where a punk band formed in 1973. John Foxx was the leader. Their debut album "Ultravox!" from 1976, is considered as one of the most important albums from the punk/new wave movement. But it did not become a commercial sucess. The album was produced by Brian Eno. The music is very punk/garage, but you could clearly hear, that they where moving toward a more synth dominated sound.
The exclemation point was a reference to the german kraut-rock band Neu!.
The albums maybe best song "I want to be a machine" did surprise.
John Foxx said " I wanted to be a machine, becouse i feel i had failed as a human being". The group were very inspired by futurists, and old black and white sci-fi movies such as "Metropolis".
In 1979 John Foxx quits, and had some sucsess as a solo artist, but Ultravox! did hire Midge Ure, and would eventually have big sucsess with their upcoming and more availeble sound. Note that the new line up fronted by Midge Ure, they no longer used the exclemation point in the end.

Gentle Giant - Were one of the most experimental groups of the 70s.
The groups compositional purpose was to "expand the frontiers of contemporary popular music at the risk of becoming very unpopular."
They did not become as big as other progrock bands, but today they have a big fan base and is one of the most beloved cult bands from the 70s.
Their music was very complex, and almost childish.
Their classic albums "Gentle Giant", "Acquiring the Taste", "Octopus" and "Playing the fool, and giant for a day". If you like other cult prog bands as Kansas, Caravan, Camel, Gong, The Soft Machine, Van der graaf generator, Focus or Eloy, then you will sure enjoy the brilliant work from one of the best bands the 70s had to offer.

Messhuggah - means "Crazy" in Yiddish. The Swedish technical death metal trash band has delivered some of the best metal albums the last 15 years.
Their 1995 classic "Destroy erase improve" still stands time. If you like Tool, Dream Theater, Pantera or Megadeth, then check em out, or if you just want to hear something different.

ELP - Emerson, Lake and Palmer - The trio emerge from classic progrock groups such as The Nice and King Crimson. And there where rumours in 1969 that Jimi Hendrix would like to be a member in the band, the british media joked that ELP now would be named HELP.
ELP delivered some of the best highlight of the prog era. They where classicly trained muscisians, and has been several times hailed as the super group of the 70s. Carl Palmer maniac drumming, Greg Lakes haunting vocals and wild bass, and offcourse the some times arrogant Keith Emersons majestic Keyboard and piano play. Together they produced a bunch of classic prog albums. "Brain salad surgury", the cover art was made by the man behind the Alien sculptur H.R. Giger. Its maybe ELPs finest moment. The songs as ofte as long as half an hour, but they are never boring or repeative.
Dramatic drum solos, wild guitar solos and Emersons fantastic keyboard solos made this album an instant classic.

Other artist and bands i like:

Rush - Progrock/Heavy rock trio from Canada, with a drummer many consider to be todays greatest.

Talk Talk - A almost forgotten New-Wave Post-rock band from the 80s.

Terje Rypdal - Great rock and jazz guitarist from Norway.

Burzum - Varg Vikernes project. Many fine metal moments.

Gary Numan - Synth god in the late 70s, but in the 80s bands like Depeche Mode and Soft Cell stealed his image and when everyone did synth pop and tried to look weird, Numan faded away. But lately his albums has become much better.

Yes - Fantastic progrock group who enjoyed big sucess in the 70s with a bunch of fine albums, but in the 80s they shifted and become another MTV puppy like Genesis and other rock legends from the 70s.

Jethro Tull - Folkrock, Jazz, Blues, Progrock, and flute. Ian Anderson and Jethro Tull still hold strong today.

I love the early 1970s Genesis, with Peter Gabriel. But some of the stuff later with Phil as the leader isnt bad, but not quite as good as before either.
Sure Genesis did become superstars in the 80s with MTV showing their videoes 24/7. And its quite impressive that Phil Collins beside the big sucsess with his band, made maybe even bigger sucsess as a solo artist.
Dont get me wrong, Genesis has great musicians, but if you listen to their 70s albums, with and without Peter Gabriel, its like two different groups.

Genesis in the 80s doesent suck, but they dont rock either.
Its like Metallica, you know. Before they become sellouts, they were the real thing. But when they did sell out, they never be the same again.

Love me tender,
Love me sweet,
Never let me go.
You have made my life complete,
And I love you so.

Love me tender,
Love me true,
All my dreams fulfilled.
For my darlin I love you,
And I always will.

Love me tender,
Love me long,
Take me to your heart.
For its there that I belong,
And well never part.

Love me tender,
Love me dear,
Tell me you are mine.
Ill be yours through all the years,
Till the end of time.

(when at last my dreams come true
Darling this I know
Happiness will follow you
Everywhere you go).

I've really started to listen to music a lot nowadays. My taste in music has also changed drastically in the last 2 years. I'm a college freshman and 2 years ago as a HS junior I listened to mostly rap/hip hp and some other "hot" songs. Now I've been slowly moving away from rap to rock and hell, even a little country .

Breaking Benjamin
Chevelle
Shinedown
Evans Blue
Senses Fail
Linkin Park
T.I.
Tupac
Nas

In no order of course...it all depends on the mood and the situation.

Since we're posting lyrics, here's one of my favourites!!

Did you see the stylish kids in the riot
We were shovelled up like muck
Set the night on fire
Wombles bleed truncheons and shields
You know I cherish you my love

But there's a rumour spread nasty disease around town
Caught round the houses with your trousers down
A headrush in the bush
You know I cherish you my love
Oh how i cherish you my love

Tell me what can you want now you've got it all
The whole scene is obscene
Time will strip it away
A year and a day
And Bill Bones
Bill Bones knows what I mean
He knows it's eating, it's chewing me up
It's not right for young lungs to be coughing up blood
Oh it's all
It's all in my hands
And its all up the walls

Well the stale chips are up and the hopes stakes are down
Its these ignorant faces that bring this town down
Yeah I sighed and sunken with pride
I passed myself down on my knees
Yes I passed myself down on my knees

Now tell me what can you want now you've got it all
The whole scene is obscene
Time will strip it away
A year and a day
And Bill Bones
Bill Bones knows what I mean
There are fewer more distressing sights than that
Of an Englishman in a baseball cap
Yeah we'll die in the class we were born
That's a class of our own my love
A class of our own my love

Did you see the stylish kids in the riot
We were shovelled up like muck
Then set the night on fire
Wombles bleed truncheons and shields
You know I cherish you my love
Oh how I cherish you my love.

And here's a classic:

Please allow me to introduce myself
Im a man of wealth and taste
Ive been around for a long, long year
Stole many a mans soul and faith
And I was round when jesus christ
Had his moment of doubt and pain
Made damn sure that pilate
Washed his hands and sealed his fate
Pleased to meet you
Hope you guess my name
But whats puzzling you
Is the nature of my game
I stuck around st. petersburg
When I saw it was a time for a change
Killed the czar and his ministers
Anastasia screamed in vain
I rode a tank
Held a generals rank
When the blitzkrieg raged
And the bodies stank
Pleased to meet you
Hope you guess my name, oh yeah
Ah, whats puzzling you
Is the nature of my game, oh yeah
I watched with glee
While your kings and queens
Fought for ten decades
For the gods they made
I shouted out,
Who killed the kennedys?
When after all
It was you and me
Let me please introduce myself
Im a man of wealth and taste
And I laid traps for troubadours
Who get killed before they reached bombay
Pleased to meet you
Hope you guessed my name, oh yeah
But whats puzzling you
Is the nature of my game, oh yeah, get down, baby
Pleased to meet you
Hope you guessed my name, oh yeah
But whats confusing you
Is just the nature of my game
Just as every cop is a criminal
And all the sinners saints
As heads is tails
Just call me lucifer
cause Im in need of some restraint
So if you meet me
Have some courtesy
Have some sympathy, and some taste
Use all your well-learned politesse
Or Ill lay your soul to waste, um yeah
Pleased to meet you
Hope you guessed my name, um yeah
But whats puzzling you
Is the nature of my game, um mean it, get down
Woo, who
Oh yeah, get on down
Oh yeah
Oh yeah!
Tell me baby, whats my name
Tell me honey, can ya guess my name
Tell me baby, whats my name
I tell you one time, youre to blame
Ooo, who
Ooo, who
Ooo, who
Ooo, who, who
Ooo, who, who
Ooo, who, who
Ooo, who, who
Oh, yeah
Whats me name
Tell me, baby, whats my name
Tell me, sweetie, whats my name
Ooo, who, who
Ooo, who, who
Ooo, who, who
Ooo, who, who
Ooo, who, who
Ooo, who, who
Ooo, who, who
Oh, yeah

I'll admit the solos a lot better on City of Evil, but the overall sound and intensity isn't the same. I don't hate City of Evil. I just don't like it as much as Waking the Fallen or Sounding the Seventh Trumpet.
