If we're going to assume this show follows what Tolkien wrote (... M'yeah, I know...) then any character who isn't a human, wizard or presumably hobbit can have full agency. Elves, dwarves and most other creatures don't have full free will.

So Amazon originally wanted Peter Jackson to be involved with the series, But then they ghosted him, It looks like the Tolkien estate didn't want him involved because he turned the Lord of the Ring movies into action movies, So they wanted this series to be taken seriously.

That's incredibly silly. You could tell Peter Jackson had the utmost respect for the IP; it was whoever the hell greenlit the Hobbit trilogy and turned that one, simple, rather short YA fantasy novel into three bloated, drawn-out, ridiculous films that needs to be kept far, far away from production of The Rings of Power.

Also, I had another thought. It's now roughly 20 years before Tolkien's work enters the public domain, do you think adaptations of it will be more or less embarrassing than this show once that happens?

The wife was watching the first two episodes so I walked in and out of some parts. Seems... possibly OK. But I'm not sure about a couple of castings, the music's weak, and it's a little "SAURON! GALADRIEL! SAURON! GALADRIEL!" callouty. Going to wait a few episodes and hear what the general consensus is on it.

I watched it, it was so bad, the characters are sooo unlikeable.The story is slow, and the acting is awful. The dialogue is cringe, it's trying to be Game of Thrones. It's impossible to ignore all the woke/virtue signalling nonsense.

Not tolkien, if you like Lord of the Rings then avoid this.
