R.I.P. Peter Reneday
Townsend Coleman announced on Instagram that Peter Reneday, the original voice of Master Splinter, died last night at 89. He lived a very long life, but this hurts because he is and always will be the quintessential classic Master Splinter. R.I.P.

Noo, not Splinter. RIP Mr. Reneday, your wise voice remains one of the greats among Splinters.
If that doesn't inspire some related FW sad art, I'll be surprised. |

Used to have a habit of almost daily seeing what new stuff people have posted. Liked it when there was at least some decent stuff mixed in. Sadly, that has changed now that too much of it is just AI crap, mass tons of screen shots, and other junk that I got tired of scrolling through hoping to find just one gem.

Peter Renaday, a TMNT icon, the best and original Master Splinter. This one hits all in the TMNT world really hard. He was 89 and had a long full life, and he remained in the voice acting business and upbeat to the end. Condolences to Rob Paulsen, Cam Clarke, Barry Gordon, Townsend Coleman, Renae Jacobs, Pat Fraley, Jennifer Darling and all other TMNT and non-TMNT celebrities who had the honor of working with Peter and to all TMNT fans who grew up listening to Peter. Farewell to heaven and godspeed Peter Renaday aka Master Splinter / Vernon Fenwick / all other characters he voiced.

His Splinter voice is so iconic and soothing. He had a very distinct way of speaking that's a lot different than all the other Splinter voices. It's hard to describe but he has that perfect fatherly yet sensei like voice.
It's sad but at 89, like so many other actors, we're going to see a lot of them pass away one after another like we've been seeing. All these actors were already old when we were kids, so now that *we're* all older, naturally they're all 20-30+ years older too. So they're all going to go one after the other. |

Sad news.
Was just thinking about Peter after James Earl Jones' death. He will be remembered for being the OG Animated Splinter. |

He really nailed it as Splinter, Vernon and Traag, he was a pretty cool Sherlock Holmes in the episode that featured him, and I thought he did a good job filling in for Jim Cummings as Leatherhead. He was also pretty great as Grapple in Transformers, Mandrake in Defenders of the Earth and Walter Stark in the second season of the 90's Iron Man cartoon.
His work shall never be forgotten.

What a sad few days it's been! I usually heard people say that characters they grew up with that they looked up to in fiction were ones like Obi-Wan, Yoda, Pa Kent, etc. Characters that would give people good advice or morals that they could believe in. Maybe even because certain people didn't have those types of people in their real lives. For myself growing up, the very first one was Master Splinter. He always seemed wise, firm but affectionately so, kind, and informative. Peter Renaday was that father like figure in fiction for me. Eventually that feeling did continue with the movie version of Splinter and other future versions of the character, but the Original Cartoon version will always be the first and special one for me. I'm feeling for all of the people who worked with him, knew him, or loved him especially at this time. Thanks for all of the good teachings Master Splinter.

In addition to Townsend Coleman’s, Entertainment Weekly’s article about the news has Cam Clarke and Renae Jacobs’ reactions.

Rest in peace, Mr. Reneday.
This didn’t hit me quite as hard as James Avery passing, but it’s so sad when a talent who brought you joy in your youth dies. This definitely makes me want to pop in my FW DVDs. Maybe me and the boy will watch a few this weekend. What are his most iconic Splinter episodes? Maybe “The Old Switcheroo” and “Splinter No More”, if I’m just picking two. |
