Mirage Tmnt Art Homages

when i draw for fun and/or practice, one thing i really enjoy doing is recreating some of my favorite comic art.

there’s a few pieces of Tmnt art from various eras that i want to try to recreate, but mostly from the early Mirage Era.

this is one of the most recent pieces i just finished.

thank you very much!

i drew looking at my copy of TMNT collected Vol.1

the page right after the Turtles finish their first battle with the Purple Dragons.
i drew a few changes into the composition.
and after i had all the figures drawn, i put away the book and shaded the figures adapting the old school formula for shading in blocks, spheres, cylinders, etc...
i learned quite a bit about lighting formulas studying Hogarth.

this one i'm really happy with.

it's my rendition of the opening scene from Leonardo's original Micro-Series One-shot.

i'm going to do this as a larger more finished piece, but i couldn't wait to start drafting it out in my sketchpad.

as much as i love the original layout, i did have fun playing around with and personalizing the composition.

this is a piece i've wanted to try for a while now -

i was going to just dive in and draw it on an 11x17 comic board.
but decided to do a smaller warm-up in my sketchpad first.

i know the original version in Tmnt issue #11 shows Leonardo's pupils.
but i figured since i was drawing the top of his face in shadow, he'd look cool pupil-less.
like he's running through the forest in 'ZEN' mode!

i've been a bit preoccupied with a few things to spend as much time as i'd like to with my art.

but this in a way qualifies as a nod to the classic Mirage i think?

I'm a little biased but I like this one. Not only because it's Raph but also because this was done for me as a trade. Not this exact piece but another copy on a blank cover. Nice piece. All of them are good though. I especially like your Mirage TMNT sketches. I said it before but it looks like they were from an anatomy book with the really nice shading. Good job buddy.

well i certainly HOPE you like this one.
all kidding aside, thank you much man!

i've drawn a few Tmnt pieces after IDW art (which i love)
but the Mirage style i love the most! it was so non-conventional to what was the standard in the comic industry at the time.
it's like nothing that's ever come before it, nor after.

thank you very much for the compliments on the shading.
it's a style i've been developing for quite some time.

This is just some awesome artwork dude! You can really see the Mirage influence and you capture the style wonderfully.

Now that is killer. I love the facial expression with the teeth exposed. This one looks so right on so many levels.
