Breatharianism - A Totally Stupid Practice!

Have you heard the news about Breatharianism?

It's part psuedo-science BS, part religiously influenced philosophical BS, part extreme diet, part meditation. The kind of thing our boy, Leonardo, might be into for like 5 minutes before he robbed a pizza joint!

Breatharianism goes back centuries, in various forms, and has caught a new wave of popularity. It is related to Eastern mysticism and Hindu-based meditative breathing practices. It's not the same thing as Japanese Qi Gong (which the TMNT do for hours at a time). It's not the same thing as fasting. Breatharian practitioners believe you can survive indefinitely without consuming food and just living on air. No. You can't. You'll literally die. But okay.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Inedia#:~:text=Inedia%20(Latin%20for%20'fasting'), and%20in%20some%20cases%20water.

Others believe that extreme "juicing" and eating very little counts at breatharianism. It doesn't. Nutrients are nutrients. Calories are calories. Breathing does not offer either of these, but okay!

What makes me laugh is when Breatharians claim they've only consumed air for years without Food or Water. I don't know what they get out of saying things like that, but it's all rubbish

I first read about this when reading an article about that "human Barbie" chick. She claims she does this - subsists on air and sun. lmao!

$hit, man, that just sounds like an extreme diet to me. What a weight loss plan!

Weight loss plan? Or a death sentence if practiced long enough. What concerns me is that, because of Youtube, and blogging, this is becoming a more common practice, especially in the last 5 years. Hopefully hunger and weakness will eventually convince the adherents to eat some goddamn food.

The other thing that I find puzzling is how the woman in that 2nd link can equate eating soup and juicing with not eating at all. Breathing is not eating. Breathing is respiration, passing air through the body. Eating "light" soup and drinking juice which can sustain the body, is not going without food.

There are many benefits (for healthy people) to fasting. Many health benefits.

The only reason I posted here was because this seems like it's becoming a serious issue as many people are being taken in by it.

The Adkins diet was dangerous for a lot of people. The Keto diet can be dangerous... lack of amino acids and carbs and proteins will kill you slowly.

Breatharianism? It's not only dangerous. It's super-fatal. Many people have starved to death.

If anyone's stupid enough to fall for the "Don't Eat... EVER!" diet, I think the human race will be okay without them.

The Austrailian Skeptics Association have an annual award called "the Bent Spoon Awards." The award goes to anyone who is convinced of and tries to prove dangerous unscientific or pseudo-scientific/paranormal ideas. A woman named Jasmuheen was given the award in the 1990's after the Austrailian 60 Minutes TV program documented her not eating. She nearly died after 4 days and blamed "lack of sunlight and polluted air" for her not being able to "pull my nutrients out of the air."

So yeah, dumb people are probably not too beneficial to the rest of us.

It'll always be a little dumbfounding that some among the smartest creatures on this planet can act like the stupidest. Just how.

Geezus people, even single celled organisms need nutrition to survive.

^ But not humans. No. See, everyone on this board, we're not hip to it. The right amount of air and sunshine will sustain us just fine! Just breathe and soak up those rays, folks. It's all we need. Skin cancer can't harm us. We just have to BELIEVE! and I can totally save on my grocery bill. Win-Win!

lol Only thing that can survive on less than these people think they can is a pet rock. Even an air plant needs more.

None of this would even be worth mentioning IF millions of people didnt do it.
I can understand one meal a day. I can understand the water fast. I can understand eating 5 times a week (a lot of marathon runners and cyclists do this to stay thin then load up on carbs, protein and fiber before a race). But never eating! And the BS religion/mysticism thing about sunlight?

That kind of talk usually comes from people who have done too much LSD!

And yet, here we are! Humans being humans! Granted, I have a lot of "weird" or "unorthodox" beliefs too, mostly political but those beliefs are usually geared towards fighting oppression and are always backed up by some kind of hard numbers or data. I can't ever bring myself to believe anything that there is no basis for.

But I guess some people can!

Obviously it fails as a religious movement unlike say, Islam or Christianity because its true followers will be dead within weeks.

So no chance of spreading and becoming massively popular.

Kind of reminds me of the Voluntary Human Extinction Movement as well.

Shredder and Krang combined had the biggest arsenal of any villains in all of the cartoons.

In that case, kind of more like a death cult "religion," but the home study version.

What the hell are you talking about? Air is nutritious and delicious. I had some this morning.

However, since I am lactose intolerant, I must avoid dairy air.

still got it

At some point, society decided that it was "cruel" to force treatment on the very clearly mentally ill, and now we just enable them.

The results speak for themselves.

That reminds, me, I have to remind everybody that almond milk is evil and unnatural. Just don't do it. You're pissing people off. IMPORTANT people.

"Almond Milk? What the hell, man? I gave 'em a million animals with tits, and they're makin' milk from almonds?! Show me the tit on an almond!"

Just for that, you only get walrus milk from now on. And milk it yourself.

Definitely seems like a combination of stupidity plus the age of misinformation that we live in. Just look at the Harvard sugar study from some decades back. We are constantly lied to, so some people now refuse to believe even obvious things such as the earth being round.
