Not bad, and in first place with 2018 share of retail sales.
Would/will be interesting to compare this year's score since that one will be all on 'Rise' alone with no 2012 involved. Ouch that 2016-2017 sales drop though. What was that about. Less interest after the second movie flopped? |

Higher than DC or Batman in general and Spider-Man and Marvel in general or do those not fall under licensed products?

So, Rise merch, I assume? Or does that include the nostalgia FW shirts?

Surprised given 2018 was a dead year for the franchise besides Rise starting.

It should include all of that apocrypha, as long as it's appropriately licensed.

I'm surprised to see "Mickey and Minnie" (and Friends?) solidly in first place. Granted, they are the iconic Disney mascots, but are they just that evergreen of an I.P. even without any high profile movies in recent memory? I guess anything with a Disney Mouse's face on it counts as licensed merchandise.

Does Mickey & Minnie include all original Disney productions (like Donald Duck, Darkwing Duck, Ducktales, Goofy) as long as they aren't adaptations of old fairytales (like Snow White, Pinocchio, Robin Hood, Little Mermaid and Aladdin)?

Again I am baffled TMNT in 2018 of all things is so high. The 2012 show was over, Rise just barely begun, the movies bombed.
What the hell was selling in 2018? |

That whole list is eyebrow-raising. I find it incredibly hard to believe that TMNT sold more merch than Spider-Man, especially by that wide of a margin. Something's fishy.
Like, that same list says that Winnie the Pooh of all things also sold more than Spider-Man and that just doesn't even make sense.

But it's the same with any of those other IP's on that list. And as someone above noted, I can only assume that "Mickey & Minnie" somehow is more encompassing than just the two mice, although I'm surprised that isn't registered as "Disneyana" or something like that. But again I say, what the heck is "Paw Patrol" - especially in that it was at Number 2? There is some logic to this stuff though - any IP that can be marketed to newborns through 9 years old is huge by default of the fact that you can put the product onto basically anything. A sticker on a baby food bottle. A generic plastic "button and lever toy" with a graphic on it. Now those markets by aggregate... that is real money. Toddler markets. And then it's even better when those IP's extend past the 9 year-old threshhold of merchandise. |

I believe what would be the "Mickey & Minnie" brand is ridiculously popular overseas, especially in areas like Japan.
And I feel like Pokemon should be on this list. Nickelodeon definitely got a good ROI with TMNT, that's for sure.

I’m not surprised. It’s a popular franchise overall regardless of what people argue about on forums
Even if there’s no cartoon or movie happening kids see toys and want them. If they were fans of the 2012 show seeing new figures and accessories is bound to be appealing. Plus it’s not just kids. We all know that. Obviously not going to top Marvel or Star Wars though. Maybe the only surprise is no Transformers?

Donald Duck
Donald Duck is bigger than Mickey and Minnie Mouse in many countries.

Minnie happens to be especially popular in little girls' clothing, so that is probably a big part of that one. I know this because, given my size, I often end up shopping for clothes in the girls' deparrment, so I see a LOT of that stuff. Little girls love the Mouse!
As for Paw Patrol, I see a lot of merch for that franchise as well, mostly in kids' clothes and toys, though I understand it is also a popular cartoon, with several dvds of the series, as well as a few dtv movies.

Y'know who talked a lotta sh*t but never sealed the deal, was f*ckin' Mumm-Ra.
Totally lived the gimmick but kind of a sh*t worker.

Now, "PJ Masks," I've never heard of. EDIT: Oh, I guess I have seen those characters' faces in stores, but never gave it a second thought until now. Another franchise I'm stunned isn't on the lists... Nick's own sacred cash cow, Spongebob Squarepants, despite him dominating the Nick programming block with reruns.

As far as Mikey & Minnie stuff goes, IF any amount of it also includes some merchandise sold in their parks then I'm really not too surprised. That's a veritable brand shopping mall right there, with multiple locations. But even none of that is included... with those parks and its history, Disney has long had a magical, bigger-than-life thing going for it anyhow, making it eternally green and "special" above much else. The Disney selection among the ornaments I stock for my company this time of year (and I guess are a tiny piece of those numbers in previous years) have been selling pretty well, as they typically do.

Though come to think of it, I can't say I ever recall seeing Spongebob grabbing onto that big of a handful of the merchandise market either. I mean, it's out there, but nearly in the way the TMNT and others seem to be. Last edited by IndigoErth; 12-12-2019 at 02:57 PM. |

Perhaps Spongebob has brand immunity?
